Description:

Galeria Namu is a fair trade art gallery for local and indigenous artists...

Galeria Namu is a fair trade art gallery for local and indigenous artists from Costa Rica and surrounding Central America countries. Established in 1998 at this same location, visitors to Costa Rica's capital city of San Jose can find us easily behind the Holiday Inn (across from Parque Morazan).Knowledge and passion for the artists and their work is what makes a visit to Galeria Namu special; the owner, Aisling, and her son Conall, along with their support staff love to share with visitors the background of the tribe or individual artisans and the remarkable collection of unique and very special pieces available for purchase. For the past 15 years, Galeria Namu has nurtured a relationship with the artists who create folk art, gold and jade replicas, handwoven baskets, originals paintings, tagua carvings and jewelry and much more. Visit the website for hours and a sampling of what you will encounter. Be prepared to catch their enthusiasm for fair trade with these local arts and crafts.

For a city that seemingly has a shallow cultural depth to it, a visit to Namu should not be missed. It wreaks authenticity with it excellent collection of indigenous Costa Rican crafts, along with an informed knowledge of the artisans by the owner who is readily transparent in explaining the pricing with 50% of the cost going to the makers.

We really appreciate the time taken to inform travelers to Costa Rica that there is indeed a place to get meaningful cultural art in the country. It was the lack of that that motivated us to initiate Namu nearly 19 years ago and we are always so pleased when people like you notice!! More

This is a wonderful gallery with indigenous crafts from Costa Rica and other countries in Central America. As other reviewers have said, this is VERY different from mass-produced "tourist" craft shops ... and the prices and QUALITY reflect this. Buying from Namu means you are supporting the culture and lifestyles of indigenous people -- and getting stunning works too.

I not only bought woven baskets, carved tagua nuts, and paintings when I was there in 2010, but I've ordered more art from there since my stay in San Jose. This gallery has ART, not tacky souvenir crafts as Sarchi does, all mass produced. I'm horrified to see reviews saying the galleries prices are high: they're NOT high for art.... More

I collect the rainforest masks of the Baruca Indian group of Costa Rica. This gallery has a stellar collection of the masks. They also carry many other art forms of Costa Rica and Panama. Baskets, paintings, jewelry etc. Don't pass this gallery up if you are visiting San Jose for a day.

Once you find this hidden gem you will be educated on the few, but important arts and crafts of the Costa Rican people. The works are of the highest quality. I purchased a Bourca piece. It was a bit more expensive than similar ones I saw later on my trip, however, the delicacy and intricacy of the piece was not... More

I make special trips to go into San Jose, just to go to this art gallery. They have the very best of all aspects of Costa Rican art. They have the best masks, bar none, in the country! I even stay at a small hotel around the corner, just to be near the place! I doubt that you will escape... More

Galeria Namu was easy to find and had everything we were looking for. I would likely visit when we return for our honeymoon trip. The hostess was very knowledgeable and friendly. The pieces were very interesting and reasonably priced. Much better than shopping in the airport or in a resort souvenir shop.

This shop has all the artisan crafts and souvenirs that you may want but of course the sticker prices for these things are insultingly high.

Thank you kindly for reviewing our gallery. Is it possible that Namu was the only gallery that you visited, because had you compared you would have seen that our prices are are in the same range as other galleries, but the big difference lies in our Fair Trade philosophy. We hope that you will return again and and visit us. More

While the selection of items were of good quality and most with excellent craftsmanship, prices were high.

Thank you for taking the time to review the gallery. It is I interesting how the the prices are seen so so differently by different people. Two constants - and thank you for mentioning one - is the the excellent quality of the art. . The other constant is is the dignified treatment of our artists. Our Fair Trade practices... More

Visiting Galeria Namu is the best thing you can do in the city of San Jose. It’s like going to a museum to see authentic, representative art work. The store is beautiful. I have become somewhat obsessed with Boruca masks, traveling all over Costa Rica this month, including the actual Boruca Village, to look at them. Of course, I fell... More
