Over all had a good experience in San Jose till we didn’t visit Central Market. As a being in capital we expect that this will be little more cleaner and better organized. Great prices tho, pretty cheap fruit.

The numerous stalls are crowded together in a dark maze of narrow, bustling walkways, permeated with extraordinary smells and sights. Take some time to explore this place, it‘s a great way to get a taste of local life. The stall holders are friendly and the...More

Although you can still buy fresh fruits, veggies and meat, there are fewer (almost none) places selling hand-crafted Costa Rican goods. The booths are full of made in China souvenirs and kitschy junk.

We really enjoyed walking around this market and having a coffee. We have been here a few times on our many visits to Costa Rica and it is nice to see the real local life. I like that this place is not designed for tourists...More

Guess it's a good place for locals to get grocery but the market itself is a bit dark and messy. The souvenir shops are not as good as those in other places of interest. Take care of your belongings.

Buy Peaberry and Tarazzu coffee at Cafe Central, they have very good descriptions of the origin of their coffee in English!

Great market area. It's more expensive than the artisanal marcado for souvenirs but not prohibitively so. Nice little shops and eateries. Not a must-do location, but if you want to have a very local experience, this would be it. It's a bit of a maze,...More

As advertised - a busy bazaar of all sorts of stuff. Unlike many Caribbean destinations, the shop keepers are not pushy at all. Same can't be said for the many eateries, but they are just trying to get a menu in your hand. It's quite...More

Because this is a very popular spot it is easier to take a bus or cab rather than find a spot to park. Make sure to take your time and be prepared to haggle with the dealers to get a better price. Pura Vida!
