173 reviews
Visit a pair of traditional markets in San Jose on a guided walking tour that explores local flavors, culture, and history. From a fresh cup of Costa Rican coffee to tropical fruits, you’ll sample the best of what’s in season here. It’s a great chance to see a side of the city that many visitors overlook, and walking around with a local guide means an insider perspective on life in San Jose.

A contrast to the small churches in the countryside but this has been the capital since the Spanish ruled.

With a decorative ceiling (of some patterns & such although not much of ornateness) above the main aisle, it was a pleasant walk around the inside of this cathedral where there's also like a chapel room of some size (with its own altar apart from the main altar & with also beautiful stained-glass drawings on its windows), but the interior I would say is for the most part a "bare one" with no shrines or such along its length on either side (except for some sculptures here & there on those sides). And yes, also actually upon arrival, I was a bit surprised by "the structure" of this cathedral which is kind of not on the scale of the "main cathedral" of a big city and lacking parts such as tall towers on the front side & high facades for its sides (although yes not a unique case here with also similar structures of the 2 other main cathedrals that I can recall namely those of Buenos Aires & Quito). Located in a "vibrant area" of the city, just to the left after coming out of this cathedral is a "pedestrian street' lined with shops & mini-malls; and to the right after coming out of here is the big street Av. 2 where a left turn followed by about a 5-minute walk is another cathedral which is Iglesia de la Merced (and which is actually one of a "more imposing' structure than this cathedral!), and also on Av. 2 but a right turn onto it followed by just a short few-minute walk is Teatro Nacional (the city's main theater building with an elaborate interior for "quite a worthwhile" visit of about an hour guided by the staff). And also should not be missed around this cathedral (actually in the plaza right in front of it) is the colorful city logo with the words 'SJD VIVE' for a nice photo-op.

Big church with nice and impressive interior decoration right in the heart of San Jose. Very popular with locals.

nothing really special if you come from Europe or have seen some other churches in Peru. Big but not that much decorated so worth a look or two on outside and inside but nothing really worth traveling for.

We stopped by around noon on a weekday and there was a service underway. We sat in the back for awhile. The church is very tastefully decorated with pretty decorative tile floors. It is right across the street from Central Park.
