Wonderful beach away from the crowds
Mar 2020 • Family
One of our favorite beaches ever! Endless views, waves, sloths in the trees, super quiet... Be careful of rip tides, we spent hours in the water but could feel the current pulling us. Were shocked and entertained by a herd of cows that came barreling on to the beach for a dip, only to stroll down the beach and then seemingly walk back home. A slightly creepy machete wielding dude trying to sell us ‘coconuts’ was the only thing we did not love. Locals gave us signs to keep away from him. Otherwise, a perfect beach for us!

My Favorite Family Friendly Beach in Costa Rica ...but a 3 for most of the world.
Dec 2019
I have spent many a vacation here. Almost no nightlife unless you bring it with you. There are too many sloths, monkeys, toucans, iguanas and other wildlife to see (unless you love nature.) It's a beautiful stretch of sandy beach with fantastic sunsets ...and very few people. Some reasonably priced small hotels ..but nothing extravagant. Only a few nearby restaurants ...but near one of the best seafood restaurants in Costa Rica (Langusto Feliz ...Happy Lobster.)

For my family this place is a solid 5! But for much of the rest of humanity it's a 3 at a stretch. So ...I rated it honestly as a 3 (or less) for the majority ...but for a nature loving family minority it's a 5. GREAT FAMILY BEACH AREA ...especially if you have a car.

Recommended for a family ...otherwise NO! We like it the way it is!

Just my opinion!

An endless stretch of Beach....
Dec 2019 • Couples
Mátapalo is south of Quepos and North of Dominical... December- February are its most popular times( September- October is very rainy)
Matapalo is a quite beach town unlike bustling Dominical( popular with surfers).
The beach is surrounded by volcanic sand, palm trees , mountains. There are several beach cabins , some AirBnB’s.
The ocean is expansive , the water warm, with RipTides,There are NO lifeguards.
You can stroll, run for miles on end.
Be aware that should never leave any personal belongings on the beach( that goes for any of the beaches in Costa Rica.
It is frequented by couples, families and locals.
We spent several days frolicking, catching waves, chasing sand crabs, lizards. We collected sand dollars, sea shells and caught a herd of cattle running by the shore!!
The sunsets are to be experienced.. we had a wonderful time , embracing Costa Rica’s many natural wonders.
Can’t wait to go back

Great beaches. Went to fish but there is incredible wildlife the perfect place to relax.
Not for those seeking wild nightlife. Ill be going back every winter while I'm still upright
Get together with local cabbie Luis Jimenez is fluent in Spanish and English He's better than most guides but you'll need a registered guide to enter the nearby National Park. PS The fishing is as good as it gets!

monkeys on the beach
Oct 2019
lovely beach very clean, saw lots of monkeys on the beach waiting for people to bring them fruit for breakfast, there were a few sellers trying to fob you off with trips to nicaragua ( wouldnt go anytime soon - political unrest and chance of not getting out of the country)

A nice side trip and almost no one there. A few houses in the area and a ;jrge swamp in behind the beach. waves are pretty big' if you want an easier swim, Tortuga, south of Uvita, is better

Great Beach but Local Guide Warning
Mar 2019 • Family
Daniel Valverde claims to be a local tour guide who lives in Matapalo. Owner of Matapalo Surf School.
I am sorry to admit this however Daniel does not have a legit business and locals refer tourists to him. His website is not working properly online. I was sent to Daniel in March from a local company which I will not name. I complained to the owner after a horrible experience and asked for a full refund in which I did not receive. Please hire guides with reviews and search online before booking.

Away from the crowds of Manuel Antonio - Peaceful beach!
Mar 2019 • Couples
We had planned to visit Manuel Antonio while staying in Matapalo for two wonderful weeks as MA is only a 25 minute drive away, but decided we didn't want to deal with the crowds and high prices. Instead we wallowed in the peacefulness of this place. We walked the beach daily for hours and rarely saw anyone - luxurious and safe! There is a small convenience store in this beach village and beside it is a great restaurant! Starts with a 'K'. Great food, pizza! There is also a fabulous Mexican restaurant you must try! Several lovely accommodations here. We recommend Dreamy Contentment as it's on the beach, and it's safe and well kept. The road into Playa Matapalo has recently been paved and development is on the cusp. We're grateful we experienced this quiet non-commercialized gem.

The local's beach
Feb 2019 • Family
Rather then fight for space at Manuel Antonio travel outside of Quepos where you will find this beach just off the main road. It is more for locals so you will need to bring want you will need.

A quiet beach
Mar 2019 • Family
There is plenty of room on the beach. No crowds. Warm water that is easy to get into. The waves are substantial but not overwhelming.
The sand is volcanic, so it is not the white sand many are looking for
