Beautiful, atmospheric and muddy just about sums it up
Didn't see much wildlife, a couple of birds...but the walk around the reserve and across the bridge was brilliant! We really felt in the clouds and visibility in places was limited (adds to the experience). Make sure to wear appropriate footwear, and something you don't mind getting covered in mud. It's a relatively easy walk, just not in sandals (and we saw several people who were regretting wearing those!). Highly recommend.

Quite busy with tourists but we did see the national bird. Worth going to the humming bird area as well
Quite a busy location with large groups of tourists.however we did see the national bird about 100 metres in the tree. The guide had the stand binoculars which aided considerably. The walk took about 2 hours and a trekking pole is useful. Our walk was in the dry but of course it regularly rains. Beautiful rain forest and fauna. I also went on a local Nature Reserve walk in Monteverde, call Santa Elena and would thoroughly recommend it, it is a local charity for school children. Worth also going to the humming bird location which has a number of feeders so you see lots of humming birds.

    Monteverde cloud forest review
A great trip and a must go to in Costa Rica. During the rainforest walk, we saw a variety of wildlife, but a tour guide is always recommended if you want the best chances at seeing wildlife. However, during our 3 hour stay at the cloud forest, we managed to find quite a variety of birds, and a few mammals creating some good pictures. 4 stars!

    Excellent eperience
A friend recommended a guided tour, and that was great advice. Our guide was excellent and pointed out flora and fauna we would not have otherwise seen, to say nothing of general information about the cloud forest. We could also take pictures through his bird scope. Highly recommend. Getting to Monteverde was painful due to lousy roads, but not unusual off the highways. Fortunately the tour included a hotel pickup or we may not have ever found the place.

    Nature-packed
We bought tickets online including parking, you park in a guarded lot and then get on a shuttle bus up to the reserve, about ten mins. Shops, eateries and toilets at the entrance. Very busy, one of the most popular National Parks in the country. Take a photo of the trail map on your phone before you start. Several trails to follow, varying in difficulty. We went on Nubosa A & B (self-guided) to get up to the viewpoint at the continental divide, what incredible views! There's definitely something to be said for walking in the clouds and feeling their moisture on your face! Take a hat and a sweater it gets chilly at the top and not much shelter up there. Guided tours are available. We saw a ton of different birds and a coati on the way back down. Lots of lovely flora. Very highly recommend.

    A highlight of Costa Rica!
Yes, we saw playful white-face capuchin, a group of catamundi going about their business, a well camouflaged parrot, the tiniest avocado ever, strangler trees whose victims had passed, unbelievably gorgeous hummingbirds in the colors of the rainbow, and the often elusive and spectacular quetzals. The walk through Monteverde exceeded our highest hopes--but only because of Elverto, our guide. He was engaging, extremely knowledgeable, and absolutely excellent at what he did. This amazing experience is a highlight of our Costa Rica adventure!

Great day, excellent guide, saw 4 quetzals
We had an excellent tour by Deiner our guide. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and had a great key for spotting birds. We saw 4 quetzals which we learned is very rare! The park was beautiful but if we didn’t have a guide, we would have missed the background on the evolution of the cloud forest, we would have missed seeing the quetzels and all of the other wildlife he pointed out. He is part of the reason our time at the park was memorable. We also had a nice meal at the Park’s restaurant.

Cloud forest on clear day 👍🏼
Cloud forest was a vary nice easy hike though the this Costa Rican forest. We had a good guild told us a lot about the different species of plants and animals. Lots of bird spotting and watching, other then that we see a couple of monkeys when at the entrance, we also saw a tarantula in it burrow, vary nice. I would recommend this place for bird watching.

    Wonderful walks
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve was absolutely beautiful. The greenery and all of the plants and trees seemed to go on forever and you could spend forever wandering around spotting all of the different plants, flowers and wildlife. Our guide, Maikol, was fantastic at pointing out such a wide variety of animals and birds with his spotting scope. The hanging bridges within the reserve were also great for different height perspectives and to really appreciate just how big the reserve is. The hummingbird bit is also not to be missed. We went in the afternoon, and following our walk ended up stopping to see the hummingbirds for a while at around 5pm and we had the whole place to ourselves. There are lots of feeders out for the birds and we saw lots of different varieties, all equally stunning and beautiful. Definitely worth a visit when in the area, and I'd happily come back and wander the other trails for hours on end!

    Amazing experience
Wow!! The views here were breathtaking and we had the absolute best time! My husband and I are pretty quick walkers and were able to get through all of the trails in the 5(ish) hours we spent here. If you are someone who is easily motion sick then the drive up will be very difficult. The roads are windy and very bumpy and it's a long drive. We drove from La Fortuna and left around 6 am. The drive took a few hours and wasn't an easy one. Once we got there, we paid to park at the lot and got the shuttle to the park. This was easy and kept our things safe in the car. It was one of our favorite things we did in our week in Costa Rica and are already discussing another trip to return to the cloud forrest. Some of the walks were pretty steep, but the views were gorgeous. It was nice to get there earlier in the morning because it wasn't as crowded as when the tours come in. Lots of people were dressed in pants and long sleeves, which was nice first thing. However, it did warm up. I wore shorts and a tank top (athletic clothes) and brought a flannel around my waist. I was glad I had it because at times it was chilly, but at our pace I didn't need it much after 10/11 am. If you can handle the drive and can make it up early it will be better. This is a MUST on your trip!

Our first time in Costa Rica and we were nothing but excited about coming to Monte Verde Inn exploring the cloud Forest. Before you come a few things you need to know. The roads that bring you up to the club forest are an extremely poor condition. It took nearly 2 1/2 hours for only a few kilometers. Also the road is extremely windy which is dangerous. Next it is very unorganized once you get to the club for us to pay your entrance fee you have to put yourself on a wait list, they only allow so many people at the park at a time and those people are leaving you are allowed in. Entrance fee was $26. Later after they directed us to the road we were supposed to take which was really only forest did not see many animals, The bridge is safe not nearly as long as I imagined it to be. Nothing spectacular. once you get to the end of the road there’s a viewpoint called La ventana. Decide it was beautiful and you are able to view the entire valley a pie it was for saying that. Once we return back we spoke with other people and they indicated that there are other trails that you could explore to see many other things such as water falls etc. Unfortunately we were only directed to one side so we did not know. I’m not sure this was worth it thank you

We went to the Cloud Forest Reserve with our guide Rossy. She is the best! So knowledgeable about birds and flora. Great language and communication skills. Both here and at another reserve the next day she led us to Resplendent Quetzals, Toucans and a host of other birds. She is both patient and entertaining - great with kidsl You can get great photos through her scope.

This is a popular park and it gets crowded, which is annoying. Easiest to go with a guide who has purchased the tickets in advance. Ours went at 6:30 AM to buy the tickets for our 8:30 AM tour. I found the guides worked cooperatively to share sightings, and they delivered on the “money bird”, the resplendent quetzal. It is super helpful to have your own binoculars. The forest is dense and with a group, one might only get a few seconds looking rough the guide’s scope. Without a guide it would be difficult to spot many things, including a well-camouflaged side-striped pit viper coiled in a distant tree, and the green-fronted lancebill (hummingbird) at the waterfall. We saw at least 20 species of birds. Our guide, Kevin, was excellent. After the tour we walked on our own to the continental divide via the Sendoro Nuboso (much steeper but lovely with good monkey sightings). At the continental divide it was misty but it was nice to be away from the crowds of other people. We were going to take a transit bus back but they are infrequent so caught a lift with a couple who had a rented car. Just outside the park entrance, don’t miss the hummingbird feeders.

This place is spectacular. We saw a wide variety of birds, mammals and invertebrates on our tour there. The only thing I regret is that we didn't stay for longer or go back for another day while we were in the area.

Awful… huge school groups shouting, listening to music on loud, talking, shouting, laughing and not being handled by their guide - scaring all the animals away, and ruining the experience for others.

The bridges are cool, but not worth the money at all.

We barely saw any animals even with a guide - we actually saw more animals by our hotel in the grounds than here.

We did the slough experience also, which was fun and our son loved it, but there were loads of people there and all trying to see the same things… glad they look after the animals so well, but it’s an overwhelming experience.

Monte Verde is a really cool place, even if you aren't a tree-hugger. The environment is very rare and the plants & animals are interesting. We parked at the 'official lot' and rode the shuttle. It's only $5 and is what you are supposed to do. Many others just park along the entrance road, take a taxi, or walk in. As a result the entrance is very chaotic and congested, that is about my only complaint, but the authorities really should solve that issue, imo. Anyway, the park is great. Spoiler alert- it was misty and foggy in the cloud forest, so dress accordingly. We got a private guide and I highly recommend it (as well as booking ahead.) It's extremely unlikely you'll spot the birds, tarantulas, bats, monkeys, etc without the expertise and equipment of the pros. The trails are well maintained but are have some elevation gains so wouldn't recommend unless you are reasonable condition and stable on your feet. If you are in this area you need to go to one of the reserves and Monte Verde is a great choice.

My only suggestion is to book a day pass BEFORE you get to Costa Rica. They only let in 250 people at a time and there are many people who simply can't get in to to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Many very frustrated people. We LOVED the trails at the Cloud Forest and the Hummingbird Area. It was a highlight of the trip!

We came here to Monteverde to visit that Park because of many, many very good assessments in Tripadvisor and National Geographic.
Guys, we are totally disapointed about that Park.
We drove to Monteverde, we paid 100 Bucks for entrance fees and guide.
We got : 2,5hrs walk, 3 birds, 1 monkey, 1 small wild bore detected by myself and finally 1 Qeutzal detected by my wife.
We simply call it a rip off!
After one week it fits into our picture of Costa Rica: nice, but much too expensive!!!
In general the price- performance for tours, meals and service is unacceptable. There are only very very few exceptiones.
We have further 3 weeks to stay in CR and seriously hope that we may have better experiences soon.

Amazing tour of the sloth sanctuary with a top rated guide. He had good English and knew everything there was to know about the sloths. It was slow going on terrible dirt roads with no signage and took forever to get there. It it was the highlight of the vacation.
