About
Less than two hours away from the hustle and bustle of San Jose, Jaco is a vibrant beach town well-loved by locals. Its dark pebbled beach is fringed with palm trees, with warm rolling waves that attract surfers from all over Costa Rica. As the undertow can get strong, swimming isn’t recommended, but you can always take a surf lesson or even ride a horse along the coast.
Nearby, you’ll find plenty of shops and restaurants, and after sundown, Jaco’s beach bars come alive with music and dancing. For ideal beach weather, it’s best to visit between December and April.

- TaraSpeece22 contributionsVery rocky but beautifulThe beach was beautiful except it was very rocky and a lot of shells, so make sure you wear foot gear, like water shoes. We saw the most beautiful sunsets at this beach. It's a great beach to walk along the water because it is so long. The sand is very dark, almost black. A lot of good surfing.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 January 2023
- Maria7 contributionsNot for familiesWe stayed at a decent hotel called the crocs but Jaco itself is not good. The beach is very rough. Not for swimming. There are no lifeguards. Also the town of Jaco is dangerous. At night there are two rival gangs that fight. Also someone by the pool told me he was offered coke when walking to town. Only reedeeming thing is being able to book day tours to explore. Its an hour away from some decent tours.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 April 2023
- Wayne CColumbus, Ohio7 contributionsBeautiful mountain views.Recently traveled to Jaco beach with friends and had a great time. We stayed in a very nice condo on the beach on the north side of beach. We found the locals to be very friendly and helpful. The main drawback was the cost. Basically everything we purchased from alcohol ..food..grocery items were the same or more than United States prices which surprised us. I've traveled most of Central America and Columbia and by far Jaco prices far exceeded my previous experiences. If I return to Costa Rica I probably will try other locations in this absolutely beautiful country.Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 May 2023
- Nicola PLeigh-on Sea, United Kingdom10 contributionsBus from Jaco to Herradura beachThe beach is great to walk or run down but really for surfers. Playa Herradura, a few kms north is lovely for swimming with some great little beach bars. Take the bus for 330c which picks up all along Pastor Diaz Ave in Jaco starting from the north end on the hour. It takes about 45 minutes then leaves the beach on the hour. You can also take this bus to the point where it does a 3 point turn past the school in Herradura town (before it gets to the beach), and walk the last km to Los Suenos adventure park.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 August 2023

I’ve never experienced anything like this! There were all kinds of Women there and it was during the slow rainy season. I couldn’t imagine what it would be like during the summer. I recommend any single guy go to Jaco Beach once in their life to experience the unbeatable.

Stayed at the Avenida Pastor Diaz condo and was spacious and well priced. An outdoor kitchen and pool with laundry facilities. Host was friendly and informative.

My husband and I love visiting Jaco for one month every year! During our last visit in March of 2023, however, I suffered a very bad toothache. Armonia Vital dental clinic was amazing by providing me with a necessary root canal. Both dentists, i think they are sisters, Dr. Betancourt and Dr. Betancourt provided fast and efficient service! I can’t give them enough praise! I walked in their office in tears and pain and after receiving treatment and medication, i was able to enjoy the rest of my vacation pain free.

Beach is not great Crocs was nice but can't swim here and very rough and dirty looking due to dark sand. Many rocks in water. Pretty but don't recommend this beach.

Awesome few days here. I visited with my niece and we did a surf lesson with “surf dreams by Gilbert Brown” … that was definitely the highlight of our stay. My niece had surfed before so we had separate lessons that we both loved. Mine was with Gilbert - he was awesome. Clear instructions, patient, positive and great to chat with. Give it a go! +506 6233 1777 - you won’t regret it.

Stay anywhere but here The town has no charm whatsoever. It is truly ugly. The beach is 3 out of 10. Not a swimming beach. For surfers only. Our accommodation (private condo) was the only redeeming part. The appearance of hotels in and around town was gross. Restaurants are terrible. At sundown all the prostitutes come out, along with the disgusting men who hire them. I'm talking dozens and dozens. Do not trust booking tours with online companies. Hire privately only. Extremely disappointing. Will never recommend or visit this area again. .. ............. ... ..... . . .. . .

Hi, I’m going to jaco in October and I would like to know what beaches are not so rough. I know jaco is known for its surfing waves, but unfortunately my friends and I don’t surf. Lol. I also read that the rip tied is very strong as well. Can anyone recommend beaches in jaco that are more swim friendly?
Thank you

If you want swim beaches, Jaco is not the place. It's known as a surf haven for a reason. Go to Manuel Antonio if you want to swim. The swim beaches there and nearby are glorious.

Hi, I am looking to have a formal birthday dinner with some friends in or near Jaco. Preferably a well renowned steakhouse or seafood restaurant. What would you recommend? By formal I mean a place that enforces proper attire as well.

Hi! I'd love to know more about where you found beach chairs and umbrellas to rent! We are staying at Oceano up the street a bit so we will need chairs and an umbrella. Also, any suggestions on any resorts that allow you to use their loungers and order from their staff?? Thanks in Advance!!!

Hi there,
Sorry I can't help you with info on renting beach chairs and umbrellas. We stayed at VRBO and they had the chairs available for use.

There aren't any huge resorts but smaller ones such as Jaco Laguna or Balcon del Mar however my opinion is that the Oceano is the best hotel with great spaces and beautiful views!! Hope this helps!!
