This beach was easy to access by foot from town and is very different from the beached of Cahuita Park. It was nice to access a new beach while in the area but we didn't feel the need to go there more than once. It was nice to have a walk along the full length of the beach but there isn't a great deal of beach that doesn't get washed out by waves making it tricky to find a dry spot to settle in to when there are many visitors.

The beach is narrow with ferocious waves sweaping in from the carribean. The sand is back and a tad muddy. This place is great for surfing but not for normal beach goers.

An amazing dark volcanic sand beach with outcroppings of jagged volcanic rocks at low tide. We were lucky to live in this part of Costa Rica in a Casita at the Playa Negra Yoga Retreat for part of our trip. The unpaved road leading to the beach had trees filled with playful monkey at feeding time just before sunset. The sunsets were spectacular. surfers paradise too

It is one of the few beaches in Puerto Viejo with hotels right on the beach and I am partial to the Hotel Banana Azul. You can walk on the beach from hotel to downtown Puerto Viejo and back! Pretty cool and not as crowded as some of the other beaches.
