We visited town La Fortuna where this volcano is located. It is beautiful but you need to be a little lucky to get a clear sky to enjoy it in fullest. We took a cab from our hotel to reach this spot instead of a...More

We came here on a cloudy but mostly dry afternoon in July to visit Arenal. Entering, I was surprised to pay $15 per person to enter the park (local Ticos pay about the equivalent of $2). We were handed a paper map with some trails...More

We came to Costa Rica 15-20 years ago and visited on an overcast day when the volcano was shrouded in clouds so we never really saw it. This time it was clear, in full view and absolutely amazing. While we've visited volcanoes in Hawaii and...More

Just looking at the volcano can be breathtaking. We did the Arenal 1968 hike while there. It was amazing to see the lava flow fields. A very nice hike, strenuous at times.

We enjoyed our 5 hours walking around the national park, but be warned that if you go by public bus it's a good half hour from the bus stop to the entrance.

Good amount of hike! View to Volcano is ok! Great to have the conversation with Guide and see paths where lava flowed. May not be appropriate for family with small kids as hike steps are steep,

The park rangers don't speak much English, but with the map they give you you can drive up to the parking space, then you get a nice walk in the forest which brings you to the bottom of the volcano - the trail then goes...More

We could not see the volcano at all, despite having to pay before realizing that. This isn't a trip that you can plan in advance because of poor visibility. We decided to take advantage of the walk around the volcano instead. However, it was not...More

The views of Arenal volcano are amazing. We went to view point first, uphill, then started up the trail towards old lava flows. Lots of birds around, saw guam { like big turkeys sat in a tree - spectacular, montezuma oropendola and more. Lots of...More

I would ask the hotel when you get there - they should have all the info you require.

Yes. I believe it is called the 1962 Trail, or something like that. You do not need a guide. It's about $10 to enter the park. If your goal is a good hike with good views, no guide necessary. We saw very few people with... More

Light jacket won't be bad, but it is going to be hot and humid. Carry a rain jacket instead. We carried a rain buster jacket something like this (Look for "Columbia Men's Watertight II Front-Zip Hooded Rain Jacket" in... More
