Some people come to the Center to walk through the botanical garden with all of the cool tropical plants. Our family did that, but we also took a bike tour with Explornatura to the dairy farm, coffee fields, cacao plants and sugar cane fields where interesting scientific experiments are taking place to study agriculture in the tropics. We saw milk... More

This is a botanical garden next to a largish research station used by scientists from all over the world. Entrance fee 10usd. Walking through the gardens was very nice, with interesting trees from all over the tropics. Especially cool was the cannonball tree! I should mention its possible to go off the path a bit; we had a great picnic... More

Really large and impressive, but shows all signs of government ownership, and run down, un-maintained facilities.

3 of us went there arranged by Explore, the local guide met us for the tour. It started with a table full of fruits from around the world that they have at CATIE. This was both educational and a sensation for the taste buds. As was the tour that followed, which was part trees/plants and there uses, part wildlife and... More

The gardens are well set out and and you certainly see a wide variety of water birds. The lake is pleasant to walk round and you will see many birds and Cayman. The plant development areas are interesting with a wide variety of crop trees including fruit , coffee and cocoa. Good for spotting parakeets eating fruit. You can see... More

The Botanical Garden tour is very well done, and the founder, Jorge Leon was a famous Botanist. It is expensive >$20. The food at the Cafeteria is adequate , but overpriced. We have stayed at both the housing at the Communidad Europea and the rental houses. The Europen Community housing is bare minimum, with no air conditioning and hard beds... More

My guide at Rancho Naturalista in Tuis brought 3 of us here for the morning and my photos of birds included included several firsts for me! It helps to have a guide who is better at spotting birds, especially the small ones! :-) And by the way, admission is now at $10 USD. (About 5,000 colones)
