The trail starts at the Green Well Being Resort where you need to buy your entrance ticket for 12 USD it is for free if you stay there. The trail is not a hike it is really extremely difficult hike. It last between 4-5hours depending on your fitness. I would not recommend the trail to anyone who can not jog... More

Hiked to the top of Cerro Chato and back down with a tour guide. Our guide was awesome and fun to have around -- but I don't think you necessarily need one. We are in fairly good shape, and would rate this as a very difficult hike with lots of uphill, but rewarding too.

I did not quite enjoy the fact that to hike the trail to the cerro chato on your own you have to pay a 12$ fee per person. The trail is not well maintained and there are some difficult parts where you have to climb. I went on a foggy day so I didn't have the chance to admire the... More

We were only staying in la Fortuna for 2 days. So besides looking at Arenal volcano, we wanted to do something else. We knew there were hikes and waterfalls, but when we heard about this hike, we agreed, we had to do it. The reward of swimming in a crater is priceless! How hards can this be? Oh Lord! this... More

This is a really freaking hard hike. We made it up and into the crater to the water, the last part going down inside the crater was dangerous - slippy, 70 degree incline, I bet people get hurt at it. We saw no wildlife, and doubt you see much. The clouds obscured the views. We wouldn't do it again. If... More

This is a full day hike so you need water and probably some food -- we packed a lunch. To get to the trail head, drive to Arenal Eco Lodge. Turn south onto the gravel road at the far end of Lake Arenal dam bridge (closest to La Fortuna -- turn just before the bridge). Travel for about 20 minutes,... More

We took a taxi from La Fortuna to the Waterfall (1 $ per person) and started to climb the Cerro Chato from there. Luckily we did not book a guided tour - you can perfectly do this tour by yourself. Hiking uphill is quite exhausting, but you can easily manage it if you're a young person with average fitness. It... More

You can do this hike without paying for the guide (although you must still pay an admission fee from either location), but a guide that can teach you about the local flora and fauna and add a lot of interest. There are two starting places for this hike: the Arenal Observatory Lodge, and the Green Lagoon. The AOL is cheaper... More

This attraction is for people in good physical shape; the 6 miles up are hard and the way also requires a lot of skills, it was a great experience, the views and the lagoon is awesome!

I climbed cerro chato solo at the beginning if June while my friends rested in la fortuna. So glad I decided to make the effort! As mentioned in other posts there are 2 routes to the crater, one via the observatory and one via green lagoon. I decided to walk from la fortuna via the green lagoon simply to avoid... More
