Love this place for buying fabric. Usually have a coat made (1000-1200RMB, 3-4 days turnaround). You have to be careful about the fabric. All the shops say "best cashmere", then you get a blend. Know how to test for wool & cashmere before you go.

My favourite thing about our last visit to this market was that before went we agreed to a game plan: browse all stalls first, make a short list and then return to favourites to purchase. Of course the first stall we stopped at we ended up ordering from on the spot! Across two visits, four years apart, we've purchased a... More

I went there on my first visit to China; I have chosen my favored textile materials then pay an advance deposit you need to wait at least 48 hours to get your clothes, the restrooms there are not tissues or water so bring tissues or bath paper with you

I have shopped at this market as well as the south bund and the quality is better here. I had one suit ( 2 x pants)made at shop 212 for 950 which came out great. I had 2 others made at shop 220, one 1150 and the other 900 ( both 2 x pants), these also turned out great. The... More

Getting a new winter coat was no. 1 on my shopping list. I know a lot of people go to South Bund but I wanted to give this place a try instead. I found several ladies who spoke good English. I walked sround a while before settling on Lily who had the most beautiful brown cashmere similar to MaxMara's. Co-incidentally... More

I had zero haggling experience when I first visited, and spoke no Chinese at all, but I really wanted to see what kind of clothes I could get here so I gave it a go anyway. I heard from somewhere that 20-25% of the price they tell you at first is what one should aim for, and even though I... More

I wrote a longer review in 2013 and this is just a shorter follow-up. This is the better of the two main choices in the Bund area. Less crowded and more locals shopping there. I have been back to store #143 as a repeat customer and have been satisfied. Their quality is pretty consistent and they can turn it around... More

Decided to get some clothes made during my trip. 5 suits, 10 slacks, 10 dress shirts. Visited Sunday, fitting Wednesday afternoon. One adjustment to one jacket and all the rest was good. Prices were good although I am sure if I haggled for a few hours I could have gotten a better deal. Visit store 212.

My husband, a friend and I visited this fabric market out of curiosity and ended up having clothes made! I did read some reviews here in Trip Advisor and other "blogs" before exploring this place. There are tons of fabrics and stall owners were not pushy. We ended up at Stall #143 because they seem to be busy that day... More

Staying in South Bund

Neighbourhood Profile
South Bund
This waterfront area below the most famous section of the Huangpu River has undergone multiple phases of development that started when the Waterhouse Hotel opened its doors. Though it’s been slower to catch on than people expected, every year something new and exciting opens up and gives people a reason to keep calling the South Bund the "Next Big Thing." There are a couple of landmark hotels and restaurants of excellent quality that serve as anchors, and multiple annual events such as beer festivals, art and fashion fairs and music shows take advantage of the wide spaces, waterfront location and the tiny man-made beach to host huge crowds of people. Wandering about the newness, one can stumble upon authentic Chinese life in the stone gates of people’s residences or the street markets.
