We came late at the end of a set, but the group of us (maybe 8 people) slid into a booth for some drinks and music. Cover charge was reasonable but drinks were a little expensive. The music was some of the best I saw in Shanghai (after visiting several jazz clubs). We had to take taxis there from our... More

I was at the new JZ Club on 158 Julu Lu. The one on 46 fuxing West Road is closed since some time. The new place is difficult to find. At 158 Julu Road is just a park with lots of trees. I order to reach the club, you must enter the unlit park and finally climb down to the... More

I've been going to this Club for nearly 10 years. Very high quality music-- perfect for music lovers. They've recently moved to a new location with tiered-seating so there's a great view of the stage from anywhere in the club.

this is my favorite place in shanghai, even spent my wedding afterparty there... the drinks might be a bit pricey today but it's a living place with a great atmosphere. the rooftop terrace is great for chillout

I’ve been to JZ Club on Fu Xing Xi Lu several times. I liked the music and the vibe. Unfortunately, due to what happened last night, I might never want to visit there ever again. Someone who claimed to be one of their musicians harassed and insulted me last night during the second session. He is Shanghainese, short, probably in... More

I stopped for some late drinks with some friends. There were few seats to be had. We went upstairs which still sounded good. Although not the best selection of Scotch the selection was good enough. I had low expectations for the music. I was ignorantly expecting Jazz from the Phillipines as every other band I had seen in China was... More

This place is great for Jazz in Shanghai. Went with a few friends over Chinese New Year to watch a live act there. Drinks a little on the pricey side but this is Shanghai. It wasn't too crowded over CNY but I can imagine that it would get pretty busy in the two storey venue if there was a popular... More

A work colleague took me here during a work trip and it was a great experience. An American acoustic jazz band performed and they were really good and really into it. The only issue was that a server took my just poured beer from my table when I stood up to look at the band from the seats on the... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
