Shanghai's Jewish legacy and experience. A half day eye-opening tour of an extraordinary story guided since 2002 by Israeli Journalist Dvir Bar-Gal. From the media: "Bar-Gal, rich with knowledge and full of humor, takes his visitors along on a mesmerizing journey into an amazing, sweet and sour world. A world where opium dealers, old world colonialists, real estate moguls, hard working poor Chinese migrants and Jewish holocaust survivors mix. "

I absolutely loved this tour - the content was fascinating and Dvir is an amazing tour guide who told us the history in a fun and amusing way and kept us interested for the whole four hours. I've just come back from three weeks travelling China, Hong Kong and Singapore and this was definitely one of the highlights of my... More

We toured with Anfisa for 4 hours and we covered the migrations of Sephardic, Ashkanazi, and refugee Jews to Shanghai. The story of how Jewish refugees came to Shanghai by the thousands in the 1930's was compelling and seemingly lost to western history. We visited the Peace Hotel, the Jewish ghetto that was very much authentic and a synagogue. This... More

Dvir is very interesting, organized and knowledgeable. He started off at the Peace Hotel we where transported in time from the 1850's when an important Jewish migration arrived in Shanghai. We then moved on to the Museum and learned about the Jews who escaped from the Holocaust. We learned and were absorbed by the history of Jewish Shanghai. We continued... More

We participated on two tours. The Sunday "weekend Tour" was not related to Jewish Shanghai but covered lesser known attractions like the Marriage Market and the pet market. I wont spoil the surprise - dont miss it! On the Monday we joined the Jewish Shanghai tour. Dvir is great. He is knowledgeable and the tour is interesting.

A friend of mine took me to Shangha from Wellington, New Zealand to specifically take this Jewish Shanghai Tour. I was blown away by what I was seeing and hearing first hand from Dvir, who was an excellent guide and so passionate about imparting/sharing with us his knowledge of what happened to the Shanghai Jews. This tour was the highlight... More

Excellent "lecture" of Shanghai history and roles of Jewish immigrants in the development of Shanghai (and Hong Kong), from Opium Wars through Communist Revolution. Not to be missed. Starts at the Fairmont Peace Hotel (Sassoon House) and includes transportation by van to "Jewish Ghetto", Jewish Museum and tenement residence. Taking this tour will be a highlight of your visit to... More

I was told to do the Jewish Tour whilst visiting Shanghai. I was traveling with my wife and two teenagers (15 and 16). We met Dvir at our hotel in the Bund. There were 6 of us in total on the tour which I understand is a small group. Dvir was friendly , courteous and very knowledgeable in his field.... More

Dvir gives a very interesting and insightful look at the Jewish history of Shanghai. This walking tour includes visits to areas you would probably not visit otherwise with passionate stories told by Dvir about the history of the place. Highly recommended.
