We stoped here because we where in the area and didn't feel like going home yet . Beautiful cemetery you could be here all day . If you enjoy walks in the cemeteries and reading the headstones -this is the place to visit .

It is a beautiful cemetery with lots of history. The soldier's graves were sad to see but laid out lovely and the Cemetery itself is well maintained.

We went there and saw many famous Alabamans buried along with many who died in Confederate hospitals during the War. William Lowndes Yancey is buried there, too. You can google Greenwood Cemetery and find a pdf online with a grave number tour of many of Alabama's greatest buried there.

Both of my parents are buried at Greenwood Cemetery. It is a lovely cemetery, laid out nicely. The groundskeepers take good care of the graves. Mausoleums are available both inside and out of buildings. Select your funeral home carefully as ours was a problem, but the cemetery part was handled very well.

We saw Hank's grave, the grave of a Continental Army soldier, and several other historic graves. There's actually 3 graveyards that have now connected. Greenwood, St Margarets, and the old City cemetery.

As noted earlier, I spend many afternoons wandering through old cemeteries, transcribing 19th century headstones for the internet and reading the inscriptions of poetry and prose. Not of interest to the ususal tourist, but does contain a large section dedicated to black gravesites.

The grounds crew are all friendly-I have family,in-laws and friends buried here. BUT- The inside staff will challenge and harass you if they see you taking any photos of loved ones markers! First time we were looking for my wifes' grandmother, they wanted documents proving it and then refused to tell us where she is buried. We spent 6 hrs... More
