The Refuge is a nice family course. It has a decent number of challenges with some left and right doglegs. Greens where shaggy so ball did not roll much. Price was average for 18 holes with cart. They did not charge for riders only. There is a restaurant at the clubhouse that makes quick food for you at the turn.... More

The ground crew was running a drag up and down the fairways in front of us for 3 holes in a row and would not move. We asked them what the deal was and they said management makes them do that. I actually hit one of them with a drive. The greens were as long as the fairways. The fairways... More

My brother-in-law and I went here to golf on a beautiful day. Front nine the course was packed. Marshall kept everything moving. Back nine, no Marshall. There were only 8 people left on the course. Foursome in front of us. One behind us and one on front nine. We waited every shot on the back nine, score cards say let... More

Just finished a horribly kept golf course in Aruba. It was relatively cheap but decent greens. Gulf State being a State Park and being located in AL, it's light years better, but definitely needs major improvements. Right now they are working on the nature walking paths. Overall it has lots of potential and needs major improvements, but considering that state... More

Was not aware that this golf course was in Gulf Shores. It is a nice 18 hole course. Don't expect Kiva Dunes, pretty sure it is State maintained so they probably have to survive on limited funds. But, it was fun to play. Nice little snack bar too.

Thanks so much for your review. You are correct that it is maintained by Gulf State Park so we do our best with limited resources. We hope you come again soon. More

Greens were as furry as the fairways. Cartpaths had more potholes than pavement. Ranger did nothing as fivesomes and kids/new golfers (on a primetime weekend?) went unchecked. Have not played here in 15 years, now I remember why. Gave it a chance. It failed. I would not spend a nickel playing here.

Thank you for your feedback. We are doing the best we can with a very old course and no money to make the major repairs necessary which is why our rates are so low. State parks just do not have the 1.5 million dollars it would take to replace the greens, tees and irrigation that has been here since the... More

Fees were reasonable, putting and greens were not up to par with the course designer. This course is in need of improvement. I realize it is not the perfect season yet but this course has a long way to go. I have played worse but this is close. I considered it a waste of time.

On spring break, first rounds of the year, this is a good course to shake off the winter rust. The course is not pristine, the greens were slow, and the turf is rough in spots. But your not spending an arm and a leg to play. Very family friendly, Others in our group had to deal with course ranger who... More

The course has some challenging greens and all of them are guarded by traps. There are several 90 degree dog legs. Fortunately, the fairways are wide open so even a bad slice or hook can recover. Lots of birds, live oaks, palms, azaleas and the resident alligator (of course). The price is right too.

This was the first course we played on this trip to Gulf Shores and it was the least expensive of all the courses we played. The fairways were in good shape but the green were very thin in places and appeared to be in a recovery state. But it is a very playable course, not so hard that you were... More
