I've only been to two forts, one 1/3 scale replica of a fort, two sites where forts once stood, and a national historic battleground, so I'm no expert on the subject of forts. In my opinion, Fort Gaines was the most interesting, informative and well...More

The whole family enjoyed exploring the fort. The blacksmith was on site that day too. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here.

Fort Gaines was not nearly as crowded as Fort Morgan, but certainly just as interesting. The walking tour was very well marked and so informative. The museum was excellent, even though it was small. Again, wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

We visited on a 3rd grade field trip. This was my 3rd visit. They shot the canon and musket for our class. This was my first time for that at this Fort. The blacksmith gave a very good exhibit. This was a great field trip....More

A shame there is a fee to go in here, given it isn't a very big town. Still an interesting place from outside the grounds and the waterfront area surrounding the fort.

The ferry closed for the day due to the wind and big waves so we went to the fort instead. Usually history is not my thing....but I loved it! It was really neat to walk and we got to watch a real blacksmith make handles....More

The tour is self guided with a brochure that is given at the admissions counter. The brick structure is impressive and the significance of this fort during the Civil War is portrayed. On site parking is available and there is a small gift shop.
