Church St. Benedict dates back to 1582 and was restored in 1761. It is the only Church in Olinda with a mezzanine level. During Colonial times, the rich people would attend the Mass in the mezzanine, the other "free" people would attend on the ground floor of the Church and the slaves were forced to stand outside. Century 18 church, magnificent! Inside you can appreciate it´s beautiful altar. Perfect for a walk through town center and pass by the church. It is in an area with restaurants around. In the same area, there are also other churches to visit.

One of the oldest churches in the Western Hemisphere! Beautiful! To me it was amazing to see the old construction, the location, why they built there...the entire experience was great! Lovely little town!

We read that there were Gregorian chants during the evening mass on Sundays and that there were liqours and sweets served by the priests. Either of these would have been awesome, there were neither. But the church is pretty and old. The mass was a basic one.

This large church has the famous gold covered wooden altar. It is pretty overwhelming! If Sao Francisco impresses by its intimacy, Sao Bento impresses by its grandeur.

Beautiful old colonnial Portuguese Church in the heart of the Old Town. Gorgeous place to go and sit and at mass on a Sunday there is nice singing/chanting from the monks. Lovely.
