A bit pricey (990 rupees) but worth the ride for scenery and experience of a steam train! Takes about 2 hours and runs about 3 times a day. About 10am 1pm and 3pm.

We booked a joy ride for 2 hours from Darjeeling to Ghum and back. We selected the steam engine which takes a bit of good maintenance by the railway team. The train stops at Batasia loop for 10 minutes and Ghum station for 30 minutes. Ticket prices are 1100 for steam engine and 650 for Diesel engine.

We took the train all the way up from njp which is a great day trip (Diesel only). The section up to kursong is interesting as you climb the steep switch backs and there is also a loop in this section. We broke the journey in kursong and took the early morning train to Darjeeling (diesel service), great views, particularly... More

So the tickets were a bit tricky to get but we got the train from njp to Darjeeling but got off at Kurseong and stayed two nights at the makaibari home stay and then got the 7am train up to Darjeeling. A great experience with amazing views, it's not fast so I wouldn't recommend if you are in a rush... More

It is extremely unfortunate that what could have been a fascinating journey turned out to be a complete torture for 2 hours! There is absolutely no view remaining with the indiscriminate construction & squalor, garbage dumped on the sides, stinking open drains and heavy pollution from the diesel run vehicles and the train itself! Please do yourself a favour and... More

2 hours or so to complete the trip. 1 stop before Ghoum and then a little walk round the museum. A GoPro camera is fantastic, but try and get a right seat. You can take the cheaper diesel option but steam and loud whistles are best.

For us, there are two things that are unmissable when in Darjeeling- one see the Kanchenjunga, and two, enjoy the toy train ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom and back. The tickets are steep, ₹1400 per person (could be a couple of bucks less since we got these done by the hotel), but it's so worth it! The steam engine will... More
