I had other options and chose to do Hasim’s walking tour. He was highly recommended because I was tentative about visiting any slum and risk being viewed as a “gawker”. He met us on time at the TAJ and we covered the transport costs. Hasim is a student and the funds he earns will help him with his education, business plans and his vision to create an NGO to pay it forward. He was knowledgeable, spoke with pride and showed us the Dharavi’s micro business industries (recycling, meals, garments, leather goods (bought beautiful bags), barbering, cloth dying, crafts), resourcefulness, diversity and inclusion while presenting the very difficult living and challenging health care conditions. He was authentic, professional, informed and fun to listen to. We felt safe and were intrigued at the workings and daily life under the maze of buildings and mass of tarpaulin. Life was bustling. School was underway. People were working and engaging. Yes there were sad sights but no judgement. It was a learning experience that will stay with us. I am sure there are other slums that might not match up but we were privileged to see one in an authentic way. Hasim was so good we did a market tour later in the afternoon to see more of the day-in-the-life of the average resident in Mumbai.

This tour of the Dharavi slum is expertly led by Hasim, who grew up there and still lives there (and uses the tour to fund his business degree) With a density of 277,000 people per sq km, and single toilets shared between hundreds of people it seems very squalid. Yet to is a proud community with little crime and no beggars. Hasim will show you the recycling industry, bakery, textiles and leather. It will be a big challenge to your perceptions and Hashim is the perfect guide

Wow what a great tour! If you are looking for something different than the usual then I would say this is the tour for you. Really enjoyed this enlightening tour that takes you through the slums of Dharavi. Seeing the slums as a city within a city with it’s industrialism, recycling, bakeries, tailors, etc. Hashim was my guide on this amazing tour, and who knows all about each area in the slums and takes his time to explain you all the ins and outs of the area. I would highly recommend this tour for everyone, it’s worth it and made my Mumbai trip worth it!! Thank you again. Hashim and I wish you all the best with your studies!
