We visited this place during our Mysore stay. There is a small bird sanctuary and boating. A small kids area is there too. Apart from this, nothing much to do here.

This is located just below the Chamundi Hills. A hard place to miss especially when you visit the hills. Clean lake. Boating is available. There is also an aviary and a butterfly park. There is entry fees, though its very nominal.

Located at the foot of Chamundi Hills, the name Karanji means fountain of water. It is a man-made lake with an area of 90 acres. The lake is home to a variety of flora and fauna.

Very near to Mysore city centre . Having a car so cannot tell exact distance from Bus Stand. But we reached the place within 8-10 minutes.
are there motor/rowing boats available or only pedalling boats?

No Motor Boats.Only rowing and pedal boats available.
Why the lake is open from 8:30 onwards?.. I understand the working staff timings but this is ideal place for joggers.. You can keep the birds sanctuary open from 8:30 but you should allow for jogging from at least 6am.. That would be great actually.. Please check on it if possible...

This may be because it is developed as a bird and butterfly sanctuary. Joggers might disturb the environment for these species. They need time for themselves, you know!
