Amazing views......
Apr 2021 • Family
My third climb this time with a 9 year old in tow.

Left the hotel a bit behind schedule which meant were were at the car park around 9am.

While driving I spotted a board mentioning local car park. So I drove towards that. Car park to entrance ticket counter is about 01 +KM walk. I didn't measure, alternatively you can take a tuk for a few hundred rupees.

Due to the pandemic the crowds were less and it was nice to have space and less crowd to e joy the climb up. It was a lot g climb. Walk past the garden to the base and then comes the first set of steps to reach the lions paw area.

Onwards are the rest of the steps via a iron staircase and a narrow one to the top. The last bit of stairs and you are at the top. Exhausted!

Amazing views all around and my son enjoyed exploring the area while I caught my breath!

It took as about two hours from car park to the summit. With plenty of breaks in between. Coming back down was a far more pleasant experience, we didn't walk up to see the frescoes as my son had enough and wanted to get back to the hotel. It took about 45 mins coming down.

Like another reviewer has suggested I do recommend purchasing drinks or other items from the vendors below on your way down as they are most impacted by the decline of tourism in that area.

entrance tickets for locals are 100 rupees.

BREATHTAKING

Breathtaking scenery, recommended time to visit Sigiriya is early morning or evening. But if you visit Sigiriya in the morning, you could see around and visit places like Aligala Cave, Kaludiya Pokuna (The Black Pond).

Breathtaking views
Mar 2021 • Solo
It was sad to see how empty this place because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But I’ve enjoyed this time as I’ve spend few extra hours just to relax myself as not many people around. If you are planning to visit Sigiriya make sure you are on your walking and outdoor gears. Approximately 8000 steps . I would suggest that you would buy something from the street sellers just help for the local communities as they have suffered heavily in this pandemic time

Impressive ruins in the middle of the forest
Mar 2020
The rock is very impressive, standing quite alone in the middle of the forest. At the beginning, you will cross the former gardens with some water basins; one of them is in form of octagon. Then you begin to climb the stair, about 1.600 steps! However, you will find several terraces and belvedere where you can stop and take advantage of the view. I stopped at the platform where the ruins of the Lion Gate are because I had crutches for walking and it was impossible for me to go ahead. Pay attention you must not have vertigos to climb the last part, the stairs are actually in the void! More or less at mi-walk you will find wonderful paintings, unfortunately, there is not a lot of place and you cannot stay long time. Pictures are strictly forbidden. It is suggested to visit the rock in the morning or in the late afternoon, you will find less tourists and less humidity. Take some water with you there are no kiosks inside the site.

Long strenuous trek but astounding view
Dec 2019 • Family
It took us several hours to reach there. A long, tiring climb, surrounded by a huge crowd. Of course, you’re treated with an amazingly beautiful view from the top. Just be prepared to be jostled a bit by the locals during the climb.

The frescos themselves took just a few minutes to see - suddenly you feel ‘hey, did I trek so long to see these few meters of frescos?’. Of course, they are beautiful and of historic significance.

Maybe a good idea to start in the early morning to avoid the midday heat.

Super view from the top & not for the faint-hearted
Oct 2020
We started in the morning and that is the best time before the sun makes it warmer. Make sure you have a good guide with you to give an insight into the place. Not for the faint-hearted though.

Dream
Sep 2020 • Friends
Sumitting Sigiriya has been a lifelong dream.. it took three decades, a pandemic and a few adventurous friends to make it come true. When I told people it was my first time, they were in shock..I now understand why. It transcends time and space, and is worth every step you take and the aches after. Take your time to savor the sumitt. There's quite a few things to see and relish

Man make wonder
Sep 2020 • Family
One of the must visit place in Sri Lanka & great wonders of the world. This is a UNESCO heritage site protected for its history. Sigiriya rock fortress is a classic example for Sri Lankan ancient architecture & talent of the people. Weekends are generally busy & suggests to visit on week day.
