The museum consists of a lot of artifacts without much context or explanation. We hoped to learn more about the history of Kandy and Sri Lanka (as this was our first destination) and have some respite from the heat but the museum didn't really deliver. If this was a free activity I might say its worth popping in for a... More

Been here couple of times, where you can go back in time dreaming, whilst walking through the many corridors taking you to different rooms full of artifacts collected, which gives you and insight in to the life styles and utensils in ancient times. Further, walking through the rooms, one gets the chance of seeing many of the weapons used by... More

As of January 2017, this museum is still closed. (Someone noted this back in March, but I thought it would be good to provide a more recent update.) On the plus side, the location is right near the Garrison Cemetery, the Lake, and the Cultural Center, so it's not the end of the world if you go and it's still... More

A decent sized museum with some interesting displays. Gets unbearably hot inside so bring some water and a fan! A camera pass is an additional cost.

Looks like it will take many months to complete. Building material and tools are carelessly dumped on the ancient stone carvings in the garden and no one seems to care

From gems to jewellery, swords to crowns, the museum is full of wonderful well preserved exhibits from from the Kandyan Kingdom, now relocated in newer premises inside the temple itself, a must visit for the curious / budding historian and school children.

Our guid recommended to us the visit of the National Museum and it was a good tip since we had seen already a lot of Buddhistic artefacts and wanted to get to know more about recent history of Sri Lanka.

The National Museum in Kandy, while small, has a few excellent pieces, which give you an idea of what the Kandy kingdom was like, and also how proud this region is of their resistance to British occupation and rule. We spent a quiet couple of hours here, which is mpre than sufficient to browse through - I wish they more... More
