ORADEA MEDIAEVAL FORTRESS HISTORY AND EVENTS WITNESSING THE PASSAGE OF TIME If nowadays we can hear about history in school and see it in museums, this is the best place to feel it. The fortress has witnessed the passage of time and continues to keep its old charm. It tells everlasting stories and passes on to its visitors some of the history it knows. The Fortress of Oradea is nowadays the living proof of those historical times and it continues to remind everyone of what it used to represent. Also, it is one of the symbols of the city along Crișul Repede river and the heart of its cultural events. LIVING HISTORY! The Mediaeval music concerts held here will take you back to an atmosphere of already forgotten times, while fighting demonstrations and guided tours accompanied by weapon and armour presentations will steal your attention. The Fortress is no longer literally under siege, but still there are many tourists and local people visiting it, our of a wish to live a bit of real history. Here are some of the new functions of the Fortress: - the City Museum - the Museum of Bread - the Bakery, dating more than 3 centuries back - cafés - traditional restaurants

During the IX century of its existence the constructions what raised on this surface of 150.000 m2 had an eventful history. Until 1241 it had been a fortress with earthy ditch and a wooden bridge. Between 1247-1569 was raised a circular fortress of stone. The fortress of Oradea how it is today - pentagonal, with battlements at its corners and water... More

We were nice surprised to find here a well intentioned guide who offered us really useful information about the fortress. This place was improved and transformed into a museum where we found also a private exhibition of arms and one of old photo cameras and instruments used in the past. A bread museum is located at the fortress, too. There... More

I visited the fortress and was very impressed with the history and culture that it represents. It is free to the public. The surrounding wall is over 1000 years old. Many internal buildings are being renovated, but still retain old world charm.

Visiting the old fortress was the most interesting thing that we've done in Oradea. Although initially was an exhibition about the communist era, then the "real thing" emerged: an exhibition of old weapons an then the old fortresses. The history lesson learned here mixed the early mongol invasion, the hungarian invaders, austrian empire and romanian princes. The visit ended in... More

Oradea Fortress is a recent renovated building. It hosts a great museum and there are temporary exhibitions (arts, paintings etc.) You should visit this attraction in order to discover more about the history of these places.
