This rugged mountain, the highest in Papua New Guinea, has an excellent trail that takes hikers to the top, past lakes, waterfalls, moss forests, and the vestiges of a World War II American fighter bomber.

At the base of Mt Wilhelm where you'll find Betty's trout farm and lodge. You can get a guided tour to the top of the mountain but for the more sedentary a walk around the closer environs are preferable. Food, well Betty has an amazing garden growing every vegetable you can imagine, ask for fish and chips and you in... More

I loved climbing Mt William, for physical fitness, metal health and appreciating the shear beauty of the environment and nature. Its safe, affordable and life changing. I would highly recommend.

Spectacular walk, cold up there but worth it. Only pity that the view is most of the time not clear when you reach the summit at morning... it would be nice to see both coastlines from up there... was not that lucky but reaching the summit is no.1 goal anyway which I was glad of I did. Congratz also to... More

A stunningly beautiful, if chilly part of PNG. If you start close to Betty's Lodge and take their guides (for a small fee - but worthwhile and very good company), the path is lined with in logs and has hand-holds along many parts. There are even proper picnic benches at regular intervals, but it's still a hike past base camp!... More

Driving from Hagen to Goroka can take about 5 hours as the road is bad at some places. Still, it is a great ride. Stop by and get fresh fruit, also nice small coffee factory half an hour before Goroka.

Our trip was organized by PNG Trekking Adventures but Betty (owner of Betty's Lodge) is also able to organize everything for you. We flew in to Mt. Hagen from Port Moresby where we were greeted by Betty's husband and were picked up by 2 Land Cruisers. After a short stop at the local café we were heading to Betty's Lodge... More

This is a popular hike that can be tailored to varying levels of skill and energy. Novice and/or already-exhausted hikers can adopt a cautious pace and break for a few hours at "base camp" (where the most trusting/weary folks leave their gear before striking out). Eager hikers can high-tail it straight through to the top with loaded packs on for... More

Straightforward ascent not too strenuous if reasonably fit. Highest summit in PNG and well worth doing. We stayed at Betty's Lodge (excellent, a real character! ). Next day 2.5hr hike to base camp hut. Next morning 2am start, got to summit in just over 4h just after first light. Ok if you like seeing sunrise from summit but it was... More
