I climbed this with a friend and a guide. So we're in reasonable shape, work out, run some, hike etc. This almost killed us. Our legs were so exhausted they were shaking. 2 days later my ankles turned dark. I don't know why but I...More

Difficult hike due to the slippery conditions. Well worth the effort to see the lake at the top. It was the highlight of my trip to Ometepe.

I went on my own to hike this volcano. If you have not much experience hiking, you can go with a guide. But if you are good with orientation and a bit good reading the nature you can do it alone perfectly. The way will...More

Very challenging and rewarding. Be sure to get a guide. $25 for 2 people. We ended up joining a group of young men in their 20's. Francisco and his brother Nelson were our guides. After an hour it was clear that we, in our 40's,...More

Nice to be so close to a volcano. Spent a few days at Hacienda Merida and was able to appreciate the beauty of the volcano from close. We did not climb it but do recommend you do if younger and fit.

You need to be a hiker to do this climb as it is about 7 hours round trip. The further up you go, the steeper it gets until you are pulling yourself up by the roots. There are several nice views on the way up...More

Beautiful volcano! I climbed Maderas with a torn meniscus. Going up was no problem but coming down was brutal. Be prepared for an 8-9 hour hike, wear shoes you don't care about and take lots of photos at the top. It was definitely worth the...More

First and most importantly, make sure that you go on a clear day in order to make the very difficult hike worth it. Lucky for us the view at the top was clear and amazing. We had a view of the whole island including Conception...More

I'll start by saying it was worth it but it was the most difficult hike I've ever done. Take 3 litres of water per person and food. I suggest electrolyte powder or gel. It took us 9.5 I was very slow and steady. I would...More
