Cooking class
Nov 2019 • Couples
We had so much fun cooking with Pum ( the chef) ;)
We were cooking with another couple so in total 4 persons. Definitively one of the best experiences we have had in a restaurant.

Back story:
We were on the scooters, driving away from the rain and eventually it caught us up and we reached the Roi Thai soaking wet and cold.

The manager, knowing we got there for the cooking class got us hot towels, hot tea and even brought us their private shirts so they could dry and IRON ours while we learn how to cook with the chef! We were amazed and so thankful for the hospitality and care.

The cooking class was 5 dishes, each and every different and delicious. We made chicken satay with peanut paste, minced chicken salad in lime sauce, tom yum soup, barracuda and red curry paste. At the end we received a book with recepies.

While on Koh Lanta, I went to two cooking classes: one in Saladan, and one on Klong Nin Beach, Roi Thai. Of the two, I recommend Roi Thai.
I went on a Friday, when we went to the local market to buy produce, fish, and other products. It was most educational. Our host told us about Thai food in general, ingredients, and preparation methods. It was good to see the ingredients at the market, AND to see what the chef bought for later. He also provided us with a couple of street vendor appetizers that were very nice.
Back at the cooking school, we all did everything ourselves, from cutting up the ingredients, grinding the ingredients and spices, and cooking all (except one little bit) of the food before we tasted it. I wasn't fond of the deep-fried spring rolls (a long-standing dislike), but the rest of the menu was great. The fish was exceptional.
There were only three of us in the class, one of the things that made it memorable. A previous review indicated he(?) was the only one in a class, and he was not happy. So I would recommend finding out how many are in a given class before signing up. I didn't, but I was lucky. Six or less participants should be a very good class.
I recommend this to anyone who is interested in learning about Thai cooking or wants to improve their knowledge about Thai food and its preparation.

Great course and all worth it!
Mar 2017 • Family
I took the lunch course by myself as the rest of the family did not want to join me - and what did they miss! The Chef Akkapak was so nice and fun person, and he told us very good information about the ingredients of Thai kitchen. The course was very well organized (although I had to wait the pick up for 40 minutes....) and the cooking facilities were great. I think I prepared and ate the best Thai food ever - creamy Massaman curry. The flavours were just perfect. I recommend this to everybody interested in cooking. Thanks Chef!

Great food, great location, fun show

We did not join the cooking class, but we walked by as it was underway in the back of the restaurant and it looked like fun! The area for the lesson looked like one of the best 'local kitchen' we saw during our travels in Thailand - looked genuine but clean and spacious. We only had diiner, they were super quick to bring a new table for us and served us with some of the yummiest thai food we had in a while. They also had a show going on with dancing and fire which was fun to watch ... even if you ll see the show around the island a few times.

Market Experience and Cooking Class - Super Fun!
Feb 2017 • Friends
We chose the cooking class including a visit to the local market. It started at 4.30pm in the afternoon and we were done cooking at about 9:30pm. Apart from having spent an exciting afternoon and evening, it's also good value for money.
The staff was very nice and even picked us up from our hotel, which was about 30 minutes away. After the welcome drink we visited the local market. The chef showed us around, let us taste various foods and explained everything really well.

Back at the restaurant it was time for a short break to enjoy the sunset at the beach. Shortly after it was time to cook 4 more courses, including spring rolls, soup, fish and green curry. At the end we had enough to take home and share with our friends.

I recommend this cooking class, even if you are not a chef. It's a great opportunity to spend a fun evening with friend and family while getting to know the local culture better.

5 hours of fun and learning :-)

Have been to cooking classes in thailand before. They were ok, but a bit "quickly quickly". This time the cook explained un a los of things very precisely and we spent a very funny and interesting evening. Prepare youself for 5h of cooking lessons, and do small portions... we were really sad not to be able to eat half of what we cooked.

Great way to spend an evening

This course starts with a trip to Koh Lanta market with the chef to buy produce and learn about the local ingredients which is a worthwhile trip in itself as it's probably the most authentic experience I had on this island. The market location moves every day of the week so if you're lucky, like we were, it will be close by to the cookery school but if not the journey to the market could be a long one as the location could be at the other end of the island. Having said that if you want to take back any Thai ingredients for you newly honed cooking skills this is the place to buy them, locals and tourists all get the same price and it's a fraction of the price you will pay back home.

Market trip complete it's onto the cooking. The course we did was four courses and you really do learn a lot. My cooking skills are amateur at best so I would confidently say this course can be done by anyone. The chef who took the course is hilarious and sort of makes the event, it's also super relaxed and you can order drinks from the bar to enjoy all the way through. Basic structure is that you cook each course in turn and then eat each one before starting on the next. Even if I do say so myself it was some of the best Thai food I've had which is more of a credit to the coaching skills of the school than my ability... At the end of the course you'll get a nice certificate that can go pride of place on the mantle piece and also all the recipes you have cooked that night.

Anyway, I'd highly recommend it, you never know you just might use these newly found culinary skills when you get home.

What to do for Christmas dinner?
Dec 2016 • Couples
The problem for what to do for Christmas dinner was solved by an engaging and delicious Thai cooking class at Roi Thai cooking school.

Greeted with a welcome drink and a Miang Kham (Thai appetiser), taught the principles of creating balanced Thai dishes and cooked and enjoyed four different dishes which weate on the beach watching the sunset.

The chef was charming, knowledgable and spoke good English.
It was relatively expensive meal but well worth the money ( for Thailand ) .

Free transfer to and from your hotel.

Cultural fun
Dec 2016 • Couples
We booked the evening market class at 1900 thbt each.

In the first instance you are apprehensive due to price, but it is totally worth it.

We were both collected and taken back to our hotel no issues, and had the pleasure of sharing the evening with a lovely Aussie couple, and a brother/sister from Germany.

The class itself was hosted by a eccentric Thai chef, Akappam. His tuition, knowledge and interaction with the group was great.

Class started in a Thai market and ended with cooking four dishes, each one devoured by the sea.

The night itself and what you take from it is totally worth it. If you like your food and culture this is a must.
