About
Visit one of Thailand’s largest and most famous floating markets, where vendors on boats sell local food and unique pieces—from kitchenware to clothing. Try the warm coconut pancakes, pad thai, boat noodles, and classic mango sticky rice as you float along the slender canals. You can find fresh fruits and vegetables here too. Don't forget to see the traditional wooden houses on stilts along the way. Seasoned travelers would suggest an early morning start to combat the heat and beat the crowd. Join a half-day tour on a long-tail speedboat or a paddle boat to explore the market. – Tripadvisor

Obligatory but not what it used to be
OK so we all know if we are in Bangkok, we have to do Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and yes it is a great experience but comes with two caveats, one DO NOT buy a thing or buy one or two little trinkets just to say you've done it. You will find things much cheaper at the railway market or hte big malls or markets in Bangkok. This has become a tourist trap and unfortunately the number of canoe boats with their wares has dwindled rapidly from the old days, instead your wily canoe driver will take you from one wooden balcony to another with prices unbelievably high.

Go for the boat ride without buying anything
It was nice to experience how the floating market is, however please check out the reviews online about this place. We were charged 4000baht for both me and my husband, the cheapest in the package yet very pricey for me. I was so upset knowing that the price of the souvenirs at the floating market were so high, 3 to 6 times more than the normal market. I didnt know until I went to the train market. I dont recommend buying anything from the floating market. If you want to eat, stop by at the food court and not the cafe along the muddy river. The best would be just go for the boat ride without buying anything.

    Interesting Experience
Recommend to take a day tour for the floating market with Maeklong Railway market. The floating market offers an interesting experience and our guide told us that food at the second pier would be nicer, cheaper (and cleaner). For those buying souvenir, remember to haggle for discounts as well. Generally, souvenirs at the second pier can be lower in pricing too.

    Give it a miss
This was recommended as the thing not to miss. It was a very expensive boat ride to see some over priced tourist tat on the side of a filthy river. I wonder if this was good when original and now not so much. The temple stops and seeing ordinary life was Interesting but the market was a big disappointment. Better things to see and buy in the city.

    RED ALERT!
Be careful! When you visit this floating market, drivers will put you down at a far place from that one and ask you to take a boat into this market. However, it is totally free if you tour that place on foot along the riverside. And the price for the boat is up to 2000 B per person or two people for 2 hours, which is very expensive! Insisting to let the driver to take you the exact entrance of the floating market! Remember!

Different experience to shop in the boats
We went as part of the tour which included Maeklong station also. Different experience to shop for local food, drinks and artefacts from sellers in the boat. But the place is very crowded and some of the boats run on diesel engine which makes it very smoky there.

    Row, row, row your boat!
Not worth the 2 hour trip on its own but you can combine with the railway market and farm visit tour which makes it worth it. The Diesel engines on the boats shouldn’t be used, it made the overall experience unpleasant, noisy, bumpy and smelly and we were splashed several times by other diesel boats going too fast. Try the rowed boats without the engines if you do go. As for the market itself unfortunately it’s a tourist trap with pushy vendors, once you’ve seen one shop you’ve seen them all. Do this as part of a tour or if you have to choose a market there are plenty of better ones. You’ve been on better boat trips.

Dont have to use the boats - Avoid.
A pleasant visit although it is very touristic. We must understand that Bangkok of the past thrived on water trades with boats plying up and down the klong. But at this market, we are seeing boats carrying tourists buying goods from the stalls lining the bank of the narrow river. LOL The narrow touristic river is jammed with tourist long boats and one will only breath in diesel. LOL. And do you know where they washed the used bowls and utensils - from the one and only pail of water. yucks. But it definitely is a pleasant trip watching the other tourist and the local colourful atmosphere.

Fun morning but may not be for everyone
So this isn’t for everyone and I’ve read the reviews but still decided I wanted to see it myself. A friend hired a car for the day and this trip took the entire morning. About 1.5hrs out of Bangkok with some traffic and then about an hour on the boat cruising in the canals and shopping. Then 1.5 hrs back. I enjoyed it. It was a beautiful day, there was a breeze on the water, no crowds and we got to see all the markets that sell all the same tchotchkes. You have to haggle hard. And the boat driver clearly had favorite stands he worked with but soon he knew what we were looking for so started to help us by yelling to the sellers. Technically you’re the one floating not the markets as they’re all on fixed platforms. There are some where you can pull over and get out and walk around the market so don’t forget to do that as well. We didn’t go for the whole big tour they try to sell you. That would’ve taken 3 hours. I only wanted to see the markets so you can negotiate with them. My friend didn’t think it was worth it! If you’re not in a rush and as with everything, you don’t have high expectations, it’s a nice thing to do. I liked the experience.

    Scam - overpriced!!!!
Very expensive! Charged 4000 for two on a boat for 1hr! We think we might have been scammed! It was interesting for the first 20 mins then became a repeat of cheap tat stalls! Definitely work haggling with the boat operators! Would we recommend - probably not to be honest as it’s overpriced and a scam!

Scam! Scam! Scam! market in not floting. We drove 1,5 hour from Bangkok to pay 3000 bat (per person) for 2 hour trip. Nice experience but not at all worth the money. Should have cost 200-400 per person (MAX). Do not waste your money.

Joined a tour to the railway market, the floating market and Ayutthaya and this was our second stop. Guide explained that this is the first place where the king back then ordered to develop a canal channel to connect the neighbourhood, and for some agriculture reason

Shared with 4 other people on the boat the boat ride at first was interesting as I’ve never experienced any floating markets where they do trades, boats bumping into each other it’s kinda fun but after a minute or so it became boring, nothing much to see either

And another fact that it is so polluted and i can’t believe the local government would approve the use of machine motor on these narrow canals, didn’t (or perhaps still ongoing) it use for your plants your vegetations?

I've already reviewed this attraction, but, wanted to add more information. I stayed at a hotel nearby damnoen saduak floating market. I stayed approx 1 week, damnoen saduak floating market was within walking distance. There's a 7/11 shop a short walk from the floating market for food. I saw several other floating markets along this road...BUT, I believe damnoen saduak IS the original one made famous thru the 007 film. I'm not sure about the other floating markets, as the people who operated it, prevented me from going in to "look&see". But, damnoen saduak floating market allows & encourages everyone! It is so vibrant in the mornings (it's a morning market n closes approx 12 noon). There's boat noodles which I tried, & coconut ice cream, mango sticky rice, bananas, etc (all yummy! & cheap). I also liked the small pineapples, so sweet! When it closes at 12, I stayed around the hotel and go out for local walks, and also a trip out to Maeklong railway, the train goes thru at 2 pm usually. I also did the floating boat ride before 12 noon, and saw different floating villages, temples and stalls. After 12 noon, I saw tourists in floating boats speeding fast along the canals (i plan to do this one day soon!) My hotel helped book a van to transport us back to Bangkok after my stay.

Terrible tourist trap. Don’t go. Market is not floating. You are and boat is 3000THB! Diluted mango smoothie 200, food costs 300-400 each for Simple salad. The side on boat is very long and as it’s not busy so boring. Do not waste money n time.

THis place is overated. Im sad we wasted a whole day going there. It is smelly, dirty, and boring. There is not much to see. I will not go again and do not recommend the hassle of getting there and getting ripped off for a ride in the canals.

Try to avoid the scam of the boat operatior wheee they charge u extra 1000 bath just only to bring u 100m away to champuchak camp

Plus bear in mind if go by boat u cannot stop at the market and onky can stay on the boat.u have to be careful on this

Nothing special and overpriced souvenir where u can get at the pratunam or elsewhere in bangkok 10 times cheaper

Avoid Nothing Special..Makr my Words

Floating Market....Dreadful Scam for tourists!!!

Be very careful when using taxis in Bangkok. My boyfriend and I feel so ripped off and disappointed. Taxi took us to Floating Market where we paid 3000 bht each!!! (£120) Absolutely ridiculous. Transport there and back another 800 bht.
The man driving the boat was so unfriendly, hardly spoke to us. Only took us to his friend's stalls selling nothing but over-priced tat. Also had to endure a very hard sell, politely saying no about ten times each time we stopped at a stall. Uncomfortable and unpleasant!!
We looked at booking.com...it's possible to do this tour for a tenth of the price including transport..£15.

We should have read the reviews here before deciding to visit Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.
We rent a car from our Hotel in Bangkok to the floating market, and then from there back to the airport for just THB 1,700 in total. But we were charged THB 4,000 (THB 2,000*2) for our boat trip (for which we now realized that we were overcharged). We were placed in a restaurant which we believe was connected with the boat driver, where we had lunch with flies, disgusting smell, no hygiene, yet with 5-star price.
All in all, the cost we spent for about 1.5-hour boat trip in Damnoen Saduak Floating Market was more expensive than what we spent for the same period boat trip in Giethornn village in Netherland, with totally different experience...

A complete waste of money. Far too expensive! I don’t mind the tourist overcharge but this was a rip off. Boatman only takes you to his mates. It’s too busy and too many vendors selling the same souvenir rubbish. Give this a miss!! I am chalking this up to experience. I won’t repeat!

What a scam. Way to many boats for small area and most now have engines so an hour of breathing diesel fumes. Ridiculously overpriced with high pressure sales. Boat driver will take you to his friends and just park there while they hassle you making for very uncomfortable hour. Do yourself a favor and take this one off the list.
