The Roatan Institute for Marine Science (RIMS) is ideally located for marine study on the northwest coast of Roatan where over 30 miles of fringing and barrier reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves and shoreline are home to an astonishing profusion of life.

Founded in 1989, the primary objective of this facility is the preservation of Roatan's natural resources through education and research. In the past decade RIMS has established itself as a dedicated teaching institution. Our facility is visited year-round by colleges, universities and high schools from abroad to study tropical marine ecosystems and the bottlenose dolphins we house at our facility. Many programs are for academic credit, some are in conjunction with other field research stations, and others are simply introductory courses to the ecology of coral reefs in the Caribbean.

We had an amazing time diving with the dolphins. We loved that we got to see them in their natural habitat they seemed very happy and were very playful. The dive master, the trainer, and the videographer were all great. I 100% recommend this and will be doing it again if I am able to come back to Roatan.

The trainers are excellent and we had an amazing time swimming and interacting with the dolphins! We did the dorsal swim and the dolphin push plus other activities. I felt safe and comfortable as we played with them. I would absolutely recommend this excursion. We did this through a Carnival cruise.

We really enjoyed one hour with nice dolphins! They pull and push us, dance with us, smile with us :-) I can recommend it!

Have wanted to visit this place since 1990's, as it was always my impression that this is THE PLACE for a dolphin encounter. The dolphin encounter did not disappoint! Took my 8 &10 yo sons for the dolphin snorkel and had a fantastic time! My 8yo has a little trouble with the mask and was a bit shy when the... More

We did the dolphin dive as a family of three divers, not staying at AKR. We had booked online two months prior to our departure for Roatan. We were just amazed at the smooth operation of AKR with first class boat and staff. They introduce you to the dolphins on a platform where you sit and get up close and... More

Touching and snorkeling with the dolphins was a great experience. Providing income to the Marine Institute was also worthwhile. However, the wasted time posing for pictures with the dolphins took away from the experience and was not truthful on the Institute's behalf. The process is disrespectful to the dolphins; treated like circus sideshows. But the worst thing was the staff... More

I was again impressed by how professional their dolphin dive ran. They had 5 people cancel, so it was one women, and my husband and I. I was worried they would cancel, but they did the dive, and it was great. Book weeks ahead as they fill up fast. They allow you to take your own pictures, but for $45... More

Far better than expected, and the day we were in Roatan it was windy and rainy. The trainers were wonderful and the resort is beautiful, we decided to do this activity based on the ethical treatment of the animals. Fantastic experience!

We loved visiting Anthony's Key. I have never wanted to swim with the dolphins before in other countries because I was concerned that the dolphins were being mistreated. However, we heard many great things about this place and how they are a sanctuary for the dolphins. We also learned that they encourage them to swim in the open water and... More
