A nice place for souvenirs! You must barter and negotiate! Got some amazing finds here and even better prices. Loved my jewelry, hats and scarves and walked away without breaking the bank. Very friendly people.

If you want to get closer to the real life here, if you want to see how people negotiate to buy a cow or sheep, if you look deeper and see how well the treat their animals you should go with an open mind to...More

So many great traditional crafts to learn about and purchase here. Be aware, however, that here, like in much of the rest of the world, there are products that are made outside of the country, and may borrow traditional style, but are actually made from...More

We've traveled across Latin America, and this is one of my favorite Latin American markets. Saturday is crowded and the market spills over into the surrounding streets on this day. If you would like a quieter experience, go on a weekday. We bought beautiful blankets,...More

I wouldn't drive to Otavalo from Quito JUST for the market, but if it is part of a day trip that include plenty of other activities in the area, then it is a great stop. The market is largest on Saturday when we went, but...More

I was truly looking forward to the Otavalo Market. Shop-until-I-drop was on my to-do list for the day. What a disappointment. It's just a town-square flea market with made in China junk. Nothing is authentic...nothing. The only way to get the authentic artesian products is...More

If you've traveled much at all in Mexico, Central or South America, Africa, or the Caribbean, this is just another market. Yes it was big with a lot of stalls, and a lot of permanent turns in the surrounding area, but it looks to me...More

This market is insane! It is a bit overwhelming at first but has a tremendous amount of artisan goods to select from. Many things are imported from China, but some goods (alpaca sweaters, blankets, etc.) are worth considering, IMO. Most vendors start offers at ~2x...More

Price is a difficult thing to nail down. It depends on how hard you want to haggle. My rule of thumb is if I really want it, then buy it because you may never get the chance again. If you want to bargain hard, be prepared to... More
