wonderful place to buy gifts for friends and for personal memories. the spirit of the market is not to be missed. the original food market is several blocks away--see the market before it moves to a conventional site...

Otavalo has the best market I have ever been too. Especially on Saturdays, this market takes up a huge plaza as well as many streets in town. The choices and prices of the items are amazing. You will love shopping here!

The crafts are available most everywhere anymore. Haggling is acceptable. It is colorful and clean. Not as large as I expected. The drive to/from Quito was the best part.

Situated on the high Andes mountains and under the dramatic Imambura Volcano, Otavalo town and its market aren't to be missed. Picturesque market in the center of the quaint city has appealing and colorful crafts from local artists. Charming outdoor market offers great finds and prices. We visited on Wednesday which is not as crowded as the weekend and loved... More

This is one of the oldest markets and it has been around for 4000 years! We were there on a weekday and arrived at 3:00 pm. I thought this was to our advantage as the vendors saw that we were serious shoppers and we were a party of 16. It was the end of the day and they wanted to... More

The market was not as big as I thought it would be, but for my purpose of finding reasonably priced nice and local gifts it was big enough. I especially enjoyed buying alpaca wool scarves (really lovely and great quality wool), blankets and sweaters. I was amazed at how low the prices were and it made me feel very guilty... More

There's a good amount of handcrafted crafts here. There is some Chinese stuff mixed in. I found the choices excellent with decent prices and friendly vendors. A lot of the options are surprisingly on trend. You'll find blankets, scarves, jackets etc from Alpaca, all kinds of jewely, bags, pillow covers, and so much more

We came too late to see morning animal market, which I heard is the most interesting. The plaza in the center of town is full of stalls with regional crafts. Prices were higher than in artisan market in Quito. There were couple of stalls were real artists were making their trinkets. That part was very interesting. I have to give... More

Visited with my family on a Friday. It wasn't the overwhelming Saturday market. There are plenty of stalls and vendors, and we all made purchases. Remember to bargain! Know that many stalls have similar items, so you can always go back to one if you decide your favorite color/texture/item was there.

My wife and I spent a Saturday morning shopping in the market, where we found a wide variety of crafts and may other items. The prices were great (after a little haggling) which seems to be expected! Purchases included wooden carvings, Christmas ornaments, and woven items. If you don't like to shop, do yourself a favor, and spend your time... More
