This is basically a movie set repurposed as a tourist attraction. We came in off season and very disappointed to invest rmb 40 in the ticket. There were no activities, no explanations (we read Chinese) no people in period costume.

I had not intended to visit but the 'old city'was in my free guide in the hotel so I thought I'd visit the old town. I pointed to the picture and the taxi took me right there....BUT it is not the 'old city' - it...More

I didn't really want to visit this site as I had read it's just a vague recreation of what the "Old City" may have been like. It's very chintzy but hey, if you like that sort of thing then go for it. My real aim...More

Gives you a good idea of what 'would have been' -- an 'extra' after you've visited the caves and city museum. Personally, I'd spend more time in the new Dunhuang Mogao Caves museum with its replica caves really reading and studying the exhibitions; the time...More

A bit disappointing. An old (replica) town, which is a bit cheesy in places (the prison with decapitated bodies strung up on crosses, an old (tv prop?) airplane that was going nowhere) and tired, but I suppose it does give you a feel for life...More

The fertile Dunhuang oasis has long been a refuge for Silk Road travelers. Most visitors stay long enough just to visit the forts, towers and magnificent cave temples that are now scattered over the surrounding area.

A third rate recreation devoid of any character or charm. Hot & dusty. The only saving grace was the wall surrounding the "old" city. It was the only thing that was remotely impressive. Definitely not worth the admission price of 40 yuan.

This is a replica of an old-time village that was built as a tv film set many years ago. Everything is fake and has an abandoned long ago feeling. There never was a village here. Just tell your driver to skip it or just don't...More
