This is our second visit and we’re content that we stopped again. This place is just so peaceful and relaxing and that is what you’ll need after visiting some of the touristy spots in Huangshan. There is not much to do, souvenirs to buy but what it has is a nice place to take a relaxing stroll in nature.

A small town , quite nice , usually a place to visit before or after the yellow mountain. The main attraction is the ancient street with shops , food , and a nice walk through.

This town blew me away, we had no expectations from the place. We were just suppose to pass by it on our way to the Mt. Huangshan and it made sense to stay here overnight before the morning hike up. The only attraction I had heard of in the Town was the Tunxi Ancient Street and it was good but just like hundreds of other similar streets all over China.

What blew me away was the downtown which is not on any tourist map. Basically this is where the locals go to hang out and party. The street cafes in old Chinese buildings gave the place a mixture of European/Chinese culture. Further these streets were beautified with gardens and water canals with fishes in them. There were steam release in these canals to create a fairy tail effect.

In the evening we went for a cultural/acrobats show called The Picturesque Huizhou Show, it tells the history and legends of the people in this region. While most of the acts felt similar to other shows in China, still it stood out with its focus on the culture of this region.

One can easily spend a day and few evenings in the town but unfortunately most tourist only know of the Ancient Street and not the Downtown area.

If you’re going to visit Yellow Mountain (Huangshan) you might as well stop here at Tunxi Mountainous Town. It is well worth the stop with the rolling green hills and the tea plantations and ancient villages nearby. It is a rather quaint town; most unlike most cities I’ve been to in China. It is relaxing and the people are rather friendly and inviting and just plain curious. It isn’t a must see on its own but due to the proximity of Yellow Mountain, it is worth a stop.

We - a group of six Kaki, explore this small town before walking up the yellow mountain 黄山the next day. Our guide bring us to visit the famous ink factory, shopping for the little thing, hand craft, tried some local food, and relax ourselves at one Chinese tea house. Recommended to stop for half or full day. Don't miss this "Ink" city near Huangshan.

Tunxi is a cute town but there isn't much to do. I'm here to visit the Yellow Mountains (as I think most tourists are) and had planned on staying at the top for a night. Unfortunately there is a typhoon approaching and the woman at my hostel strongly suggested not staying over night on the mountain as weather is unpredictable and hiking down in a typhoon could be very dangerous. So I ended up doing the mountain in 1 day then having a whole day free in Tunxi. Honestly, I should have risked the typhoon. Ancient street is cool but you only need 2 hours max to really take it all in. Not much else to do here. I've stayed 2 nights so far (Thursday and Friday) and haven't noticed much of a night life either. A lot of little coffee/bar shops with no one in them.

Cute place but you really only need 1/2 day to get the full experience.

This is half an hour from the train station And is quite convenient. It is a town of about 250,000 people near Huangshan. It has grown tremendously during this period. There is the old street, the new street and a few museums here.

If here to climb Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), more often than not the first consideration is whether to stay in Tunxi (about an hour’s drive) or Tangkou (at the foot of the mountain). For my money Tunxi wins out over the rather bleak-looking Tangkou. The ancient town is touristy there’s no doubt, but its narrow (& carless!!!) streets, dark wooden buildings adorned with intricate carvings, and old-worldly prototype, give it a charm that’s worth the stop if you haven’t experienced anything similar in China. Despite being among thousands, there’s calm in the red and yellow lantern lighting and plenty of alfresco café-style restaurants to stop and relax in a reasonably quiet and pollution-free environment by city-China standards. It’s mostly western food (& prices), but you can get cheaper authentic local cuisine on the streets circumnavigating the town, easily accessible on foot. Running alongside, but on the busy (& car-filled) streets outside the old town, the river is worth visiting early morning (dawn) and evening for a better bona-fide experience with locals. Like almost everywhere in China, Tunxi wraps up early (about 11pm – midnight) and starts early.

Take taxi from Hangzhou airport to West Gate bus station it takes about 50 minutes and 170 Yuan.
Purchase ticket to Tunxi at the counter, make sure you have the destination city written in chinese character so you can show the officer. Price for ticket 88 yuan per person incl. one bottle of mineral water you can take at the boarding gate. In the ticket number of gate, bus number, and number of allocated seats are written. Very punctual, boarding 20 minutes before departure. Bus schedule to Tunxi is every 30 minutes.

The shops dominate the old town, but forget all the stone carvings and other touristy stuff and check out the architecture. It is beautiful old city with lots of alleys, where the original families still live.
