Dating to the 12th century, this strategic fortress is one of two highly fortified hills (Trapezitza being the other) that protected Bulgarian rulers living on the site in the tsar’s palace.

Astonish ruins, a very good perspective over Veliko Tarnovo town. Ruins and the new cathedral on the top are easy to access in a visit of one hour. Nice to see also during the evening the sound and lights show around the ruins.

We really enjoyed walking around the fortress on the cobblestones. It was really majestic on the hill. Inside the fortress on the top was a chapel that instead of like most chapels/churches in Europe, the paintings on wall looked like pen and ink drawings. Very enjoyable!

This is quite an extensive site, not well suited to those who find uneven ascents and cobblestones difficult. For those who can cope, the views are really rewarding. There are very few English information panels, although most things are labelled in Bulgarian and German. Near the top of the ascent there is a shaded area with a commentary in English,... More

The light show in the evening is pretty cool and it's worth a walk around during the day. Lots of history to learn about here.

This is the main attraction the city has to offer and is so worth seeing. We went all the way up the hill and it was really nice because the view is very pretty. Also, it is worth checking the sound and light show in the evenings.

We'd gone specifically to Veliko Tarnovo to see the fortress and while it was quite grand in size and neat to walk on stones that old... There are so many lights all over it and so little of it restored that we admittedly got quite bored. It's more of a park than a museum type place and debatable whether worth... More

I wouldn't travel to Tarnovo just to see the fortress. A very popular town for Bulgarians and it appears that the biggest draw card to the town is the laser light show that features during the peak tourist period.. personally we thought the town was seriously suffering economically, and many of the old town buildings were abandoned and crumbling. Much... More

We visited in August 2016 and we absolutely loved it. A very interesting place, a must-see for anyone that visits Bulgaria. The "Sound and Light" show in the evening left us speechless - it was simply stunning!

Snowed the day we went, so it was very cold. Great atmosphere and interesting place . I could see how it would be in summer. Easy walk from old town
