Neighbourhood:
Sé, which derives its name from Sé Square, is a central neighbourhood in historic São Paulo. Close by, the Law School, the Museum of the Court of Justice and the Metropolitan Cathedral offer inspiring architecture. If you are looking for cultural activities, head to Caixa Cultural and check the schedule. In the area there is a popular pedestrian street called “Rua Direita”, one of the first streets in the region, which today marks the crowded perimeter. Sé is a great area to explore during daytime, but use caution if visiting alone at night.

This place was listed as a “must see”in a tourist brochure. We almost thought that it could just be hyperbole. But no! This place is the number one place that we visited in São Paulo. We ensured we were there for the free, guided, one hour tour. The guide was excellent. His method of getting us think about the time, place and context of the monument to wealth in São Paulo early in the 1900’s was stimulating. This building is an absolute treasure of art work, sculpture, design and usage.

With the guide explaining so many wonderful details, we learned so much. Don’t miss seeing this beautiful building -particularly inside. We were told just how reasonable tickets were to attend a performance of opera, music concert or plays.

Top 5 things to do in SP and very affordable - Takes after Opéra Garnier in Paris
Feb 2018 • Couples
There is a free guided tour in English at 11 am on weekdays. It lasts one hour which is more than we wanted to spend there but was very informative. We learned how affordable it is: 40 to 120 reais only, sometimes even free. I loved the Walkyrie mosaic and all the marble and stainless glass.

Spectacular building
Feb 2018 • Couples
One of the most beautiful buildings in São Paulo. Recommended is to take the guided tour to learn the history of the building. Only bad point was that we couldn’t see the main room because of a rehearsal going on at the time.

A reminder of grander times

Hardly the Palais Garnier, but would qualify as a pretty grand regional German opera house - lots of polished brass and bronze, if not that much gilt.
The glass in the windows at the front from the outside is the best I have seen at seeming to have a third dimension.
The buffet on the ground floor is also rather impressive decorwise, and foodwise.
No service upstairs on the night I was there.

Don't worry about safety outside, so long as you have booked a taxi/uber in advance.
The police put one (or three!) police cards outside with lights flashing, and do actually stand outside their cars to protect the audience getting from theatre to taxi.

Concert programmes may look short, but given encores, late starts etc, usually finish two hours after starting time.

They don't explicitly take orders for food and drinks beforehand for the interval, but one can achieve it anyway: queue up beforehand and buy vouchers (there is a price list, that E.g. sparkling wine is BRL25.
Then hold on to the vouchers until the interval.
Using them then you will be ahead of the people queueing at that stage to hand over their cash for tickets.

Sumptuous!

Besides its beauty, outside and especially inside, it tells us a bit of Brasil's moments 100 years ago. I recommend the guide tour to have a flavor of it.
