Catholic and Baroque art in Central São Paulo
Sep 2019
This a good option to those with few time to expend in São Paulo Central area. If you like baroque, catholic art, is a must go.

You definitely must see this.
You'll be greeted by a group of enthusiasts at the entrance and you'll pay nothing if you are over 60 years old (take your ID with you).
The location (Luz metro station) is not the most desirable in Sao Paulo, so "keep your wits around you" when leaving the metro station. Despite this, it's a great place.

Small but very wortwhile

The collection here is quite small and you can thoroughly check out everything in an hour or less. Many of the pieces are very unusual and very interesting. For example, there is a graphic, gory statue of Christ on the cross , a sizeable collection of silver artifacts including a big staff and a crown plus some very well exucuted paintings in a sort of naive/ folk style. When viewing these pieces it very quickly becomes apparent that they are not just art for art's sake; they are at least partly meant to bring stories from the bible alive and to inspire people , and , whether or not you are religious , they are undeniably very well designed for this purpose. In a way, this museum , its contents and its grounds , are a sort of lesson in the history of Sao Paulo and Brazil.A peaceful oasis in the megalopolis.

Quick and Easy

I enjoyed the museum as it had a variety of relics of churches from Brazil. It has the second largest collection of sacred oil lamp chandeliers in the world, second to the Vatican. Some of the religious artifacts are absolutely beautiful. Many times, some of the statues you see in churches are high and quite a distance. Here, you can be face to face with some of these religious statues and see much more detail.

They allow you to take pictures, but only without a flash. Entry fee is R$ 6,00 (USD $2.00). Takes less than an hour to see everything. The building itself is very old, and I am always fascinated with old architecture and building materials.

Disappointing
Aug 2016 • Solo
I would barely call this a museum, it's more a collection of random objects from some churches, and I was kind of surprised because it was recommended in a guide book. If you are really bored and have time to spare, go, but otherwise it's definitely not something you will miss out on. It was also strange because the guy told me the main attraction there would be open at 2pm, why isn't it open during the museum hours? I wasn't going back for that.

Church Museum
Jul 2014
Churches in Brazil were and are important because to the deep link between politic and social state and church. It is in the roots of the country. Undeniable. if you like or want to learn more about those subjects this is a good place to visit. Please be aware that this hood is extremely dangerous, even with a city police corporation just beside. Look for your surroundings and people approaching you. They know recognize who is local and who is not.

Well worth visiting if you like religious art
Oct 2014 • Solo
If you like sacred art, particularly the Catholic kind with its emphasis on the Virgin Mary, saints and miracles, then this is a good place to visit.

The presentation may not be as imposing as in some European or American museums but you can´t complain about not getting close to an impressive collection of artwork, mainly Brazilian.

There are thousands of items, ranging from altar pieces and life-sized statues going back to the 18th century to a whole collection of cribs from all over the world.

There are relatively few paintings and they are not as impressive as the artwork.

The complex is built round a beautiful little courtyard that is visible from all sides. It also houses a small Baroque church dedicated to a Franciscan monk called Frei Galvão who was Brazil´s second saint. He was well known for his healing powers and his tomb is still visited by women thanking him for miraculous cures they believe have occurred due to his intercession.

Finally, the Museum is within walking distance of two of São Paulo´s other main tourist attractions – the Pinacoteca art gallery and the Portuguese language museum. However, make sure you keep clear of this district in the evening as it can be dangerous.
