Neighbourhood: Pacaembu
Highlights of this neighbourhood include Pacaembu Stadium and the Museum of Soccer, but they are not the only attractions it offers. Street markets are part of São Paulo’s culture, and at Charles Miller Square you will find one of the city's best. Arrive early to be delighted by fresh fruits, vegetables, coconut water and “pastel”, fried dough filled with innumerable options including cheese, meat, and shrimp. If you are into architecture, don’t miss Casa Modernista and Casa Buarque de Holanda, two historic houses. The small residential streets along Pacaembu offer quiet refuge from the chaotic traffic.

Awesome Cultural Center
Feb 2017 • Solo
This is a great place to do a lot of things-swim, fitness classes, concerts, plays, have a reasonably priced meal, and read a book 😊if you work and live in Brazil you can get a free membership card which provides deeper discounts. You can still use Sesc without the membership card.

Cool venue for performance
Mar 2016
I attended a performance in the theater. Because I was late, I had to run through the rest of the facility, but all the spaces seemed amazing. An old factory that has been converted into a cultural center. The theater was beautiful with excellent sound, lighting, and sight lines, and the performers (Pau Brasil) were top notch.

One of my favourite places in SP
Nov 2015 • Friends
If you're visiting SP, always - I mean ALWAYS - check what is going on in the various SESC facilities around the city. There are always good (and very affordable/free) concerts, exhibits, lectures and different activities. If you're around Pompeia, do stop by Sesc Pompeia, if nothing else, to have a cup of coffee of their delicious and insanely cheap frozen yogurt and browse the various magazines and newspapers from around the country (and world) to be found at the library. Check for concerts all week long (except Mondays, when the place is closed), specially at the Choperia, the dancing venue. Order a glass of decent and very affordable wine to dance along the always great bands/singers and feel the "paulista" vibe in the place. During weekends, there's always different activities for children and the place in itself is great for families, no matter what.

Amazing cultural centre
Aug 2015 • Family
Designed by architect Lina Bo Bardi over an industrial plant of the 1930’s, SESC Pompeia is located in the Barra Funda neighbourhood, just a 10 min walk from Agua Branca CPTM train station or 2 km from Barra Funda underground station.

This cultural centre in some aspects reminds me of London’s Barbican Centre. It has a theatre, musical stages, exhibition spaces, a library, restaurant and a bar. They host many creative workshops and have also sports facilities (the latter just for SESC members, I guess.).

Combining public funding and private administration, it is part of a larger organisation dedicated to cultural, sports and training activities for workers. Food is sold at subsidised prices, and I’ve had the best aubergine sandwich of my life there, at just R$ 6,00. Tickets for musical and theatrical performances are also sold at low prices.

Just look for their events calendar at their website (Portuguese only), it is definitely worth visiting.

Amazing family program!
Jul 2015 • Family
Starting with the building, which is a recycled factory, to the multiple cultural activities they offer for adults of all ages, children, teens, in short, everybody, this is an amazing experience. They offer music shows, exhibitions, hands on activities and crafts, etc. And it is all free! They even have their own cafeteria with homestyle options. Great way to spend quality time with family and friends or even go by yourself...
