This is a very nice square in the heart of downtown and where I love to start whenever I'm showing "centro" to visitors. There's lots around to see and visit (Theater, Library, Fine Arts Museum, etc), just be smart and keep a low profile when walking around the area, don't stay after dark and avoid going on the weekends. You... More

This building is very elegantly and ornately decorated. I think it's the most beautiful building from the outside in Rio de Janeiro.

This is such a beautiful place in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, with historical ornate buildings. You can have a gourgeous view of the Sugar Loaf form the top of the Teatro Municipal staircase.

In addition to the very spectacular Teatro Municipal / Opera House, Cinelandia offers interesting classic and some Art Deco architecture set around a pleasant square. So named because there were many cinemas here in the '20's and 30's, it is easily accessible by Rio's excellent Metro system and is definitely worth a look.

Cinelandia is in downtown Rio and is the place where you can see the Portuguese influence by the architecture of the buildings around. This is also where the Municipal Theater is, really beautiful. You may try one of the typical Portuguese "botequins" to get a cold draft. Happy hour time is busy.

Cinelandia is a must visit place when in Rio! It is full of people not only during the whole working day, but also on the evening. It is fun to sit down and just watch people, but also there are quite few buildings to be seen - Municipal Theatre, Library, Museum of Fine Arts, just to mention the most known... More

This area of Rio is pretty nice! You can walk around Cinelandia and see the National Theater El Teatro Odeon and a variety of cool buildings! The Subway stop is right there and you can walk to Santa Teresa and other Carioca Landmarks. Didn't looked dangerous, but I'll not go late at night or during the weekend!

I asked my private tour guide to take me to Municipal Theater. So he took me to Cinelândia square. In addition to Municipal Theater, I saw National Library, Rio de Janeiro Council Chamber and the former Supreme Court, all facing the square; and the National Art Museum on the other side of Municipal Theater. In the square there was a... More

Neighborhood full of old and great buildings, most of them really well kept: hotels, bars, theathers and so on. A joyful walk in the heart of a golden age Rio. Not much foreign tourists comparing to other Rio sites. Just go!

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.
