Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

Ilha Fiscal
Oct 2019
This was originally a customs house and a spectacular one at that.

It is now a museum located in an island in Guanabara Bay.

We went past it on a ferry trip which gave us a closer look. It can also be viewed from many other vantage points in Rio.

nice small castle to understand the last party of the monarchy
Jan 2019
the tour starts with a trip in a boat to the island, after that you get to the castle and get a briefing about the island and the last party with the presence of the emperor close to the proclamation of the republic. although small you can still feel part of the history

Limited tour
May 2019
We went by bus, since the weather was to unstable for boat. They island is very small. The tour starts with a talk in Portuguese for 20 minuets and a video demonstration. After you can walk to the top floor and one of the other room in the building. The tour was not so fun for the kids, and non Portuguese speakers. The castle looking house was very pretty and I am glad to have seen it. If I have had a short stay in Rio this would not be a spot I would prioritize.

Mini castle in Guanabara Bay

As you travel the waterfront area, you may notice this green fairytale type palace. It was originally built as the customs house for Rio, an then was offices for the navy and now a museum.

You purchase your ticket at the Naval Museum on the waterfront a couple of blocks north of Praça XV. Tickets currently are R$ 30, or R$ 15 for under 21 or over 60. Note, if you are over 60 or handicapped there is a special priority line to the right as you enter the facility.

I visited during the lead up to carnival and instead of being transported to the island by bus, we boarded a boat and arrived by sea. The guide mostly gave the tour in Portuguese, but she did fill me in with a synopsis. You need to plan on around 2 hours for your visit.

One of the most beautiful locations in Rio. Access to the island is via a short bus trip from the visitor center. The old customs island is in a strategic position where you can see the connection of the Guanabara bay to the Atlantic Ocean, also you can see many of the old Portuguese forts, the City of Rio de Janeiro and the city of Niterói. The view is incredible. The building is very nice carved in Gneiss with beautiful glass murals. It is also a nice history lesson about the last days of the Brazilian monarchy.

Time travel with a twist
Jun 2016 • Friends
When you land in Rio's domestic airport (Santos Dumont) you may notice a curious, small green building, which seems completely out of place in the Guanabara Bay. A gothic palace with tower, arches and stainmed glass windows.

There is a tour for a guided visit of the place. Ilha Fiscal was so named because the government decided to build a customs facility, and the island was the perfect location, with a full view of the only naval access to Rio.

So why doesn't it look like a normal building? Well, the Emperor of Brazil at the time descended from the Habsburgs and thought that the location was to good to be wasted on an ugly building, so he decided to go all the way to an European-styled castle.

Every schoolboy in Brazil has heard of this place. This is because in the last week before Brazil became a republic, the crown held a gigantic party in the island - which came to be known as The Last Ball of the Monarchy.

So in a sense to visit the island is to travel to this instant in time. But since the island is inside a busy bay, you will see lots of ships cruising by,and every few minutes an airplane will fly over the area in the final approach to the airport.

Is it worth it? Definetely. At the very least, the island commands an impressive view of the Bay, the Sugar Loaf, the Corcovado Mountain with the Christ Redeemer on top and the downtown area.

If you do not speak Portuguese, the guides will provide a booklet to help. Be sure to be around in the beginning of the visit so you get yours.

Beautiful
Feb 2016 • Couples
Its beautiful. And you get a neat view of the naval base and rio... but the tour takes about an hour but the tour length is 2 and a half hours. The guided portion was only in portuguese.
There were two big exhibits, one was in a dining room/parlor from a party in the 1890s, the other was about the navy and amazonia azul.
Worth the trip, bring water. And just roam around on your own.
