Neighbourhood: Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

Gorgeous building
Feb 2020
The inside is beautiful, with art deco features, a high atrium, and sweeping staircase. You have to store your bags in a locker, which is very cheap and you get your money back when you're finished. You're not allowed to go in the research rooms but you can peek in, and the whole thing is worth a 20-30 minute visit.

Wonderful Design
May 2019
Firstly, the exterior of the place is truly remarkable and hosts some very intricate architectural designs. When inside, you get an appreciation of the grandeur of the place and get lost in the immense scale of the building. There are many rooms and reading rooms in which to explore, so please check it out!

We chanced on this and what a discovery. So many books in such a wonderful setting. I don't understand why this is not better publicised.

Totally renovated exterior
Feb 2019 • Solo
Finally, after years of being shrouded in a giant hair net, and surrounded with hoardings, the national library has emerged into the bright light of day with a complete beautiful facelift. The interior has also undergone some work, and currently highlights an exhibition of art and books detailing the development of Brazil in the decade from 1808 - 1818. However, the climate controlled stacks and many other rooms remain behind glass and heavily guarded. As a casual visitor you may not enter. As a researcher you may enter. The library has an extensive historic collection of ancient texts imported from Portugal. Oh and the skylight is really quite lovely, as are the long ribboned curtains showing movies in the main foyer.

Not Much to See
Jan 2019 • Couples
Magnificent building (foyer is lovely) but we just walked in and visited all we could without a tour and there was just not much to see. There are some exhibit rooms but again not much.

Guided tour is the must
Jan 2019 • Couples
The guided tour to Bibliotheca National in Rio takes only 30-40 min and allow you to visit rooms that are not normally opened to the public. This is an historical building, with one of the most important collection of books in the world.

Beautiful building, but couldn't really see stacks or book
Dec 2018 • Friends
I've seen amazing photos of this magnificent library and looked forward to seeing it. While the library is incredibly beautiful, regular visitors aren't really able to view the balconies upon balconies of vintage books that I've seen in the photos. The areas guest are allowed to visit are limited to the extent where it's impossible to see or take photos of that.

However, I did get to see a Guttenberg Bible and the grandness and decor of the foyer and hallways are unforgettable. I just didn't get to see any other BOOKS.

Please note: This is not an easy destination for those who are mobility impaired.

It is free and you are provided a locker for your personal belongings.

Take a break from the beach to see the books
Jul 2018 • Family
This is very well worth a visit both because of its architectural value and also for its literacy value as the National Library. You can take a guided tour which takes about half an hour and gives you a good idea of what the Library does besides storing and restoring books and documents. Most of the original furniture came from the UK as well as some of the iron work. It is much more interesting than sitting on the beach! There was no charge for entry.

The place is not big and you can not access all parts of library, despite it, totally worth the visit. It’s beautiful and kind of majestic.

Not as expected
Oct 2017 • Solo
To be honest we were really enthusiastic about visiting the Library and all the viral pictures seen on facebook. But we we not able to see the big wall full of book. Basicaly the only thing to see is the lobby which is great and close to European Architecture. But all in all it takes 10 min to visit.
