This place is a real jewel in the heart of Rio. The old Portuguese library is richly decorated both inside and out, and contains a huge amount of rare books. Located in bustling downtown Rio, it is an oasis of calm.

This can be a quick stop, but just beautiful fresco ceiling, several stories of shelves holding antiquarian collection. Impressive.

As the previous reviews have said, this library is indeed a hidden gem. Recently rennovated, it is located slightly off the beaten path.

This impressive buildings founded in 1837 holds the largest and most valuable library outside Portugal. There are very old reference books on the shelves alongside modern books! Reference material is also kept in digital form.

Portuguese Royal Library is a real architectural jewel, but also a mecca of those who want to see some really rare books. The venue is often used for historic Brazilian soap operas.

Being created in 1837 by a group of Portuguese Immigrants in this Neo Manuelin style building, with outstanding stained...More

for those who walk downtown, this may be a welcome stop to escape the heat and the hustle for a moment. Then you can admire the building and the rare books it protects- kind of a `Harry Potter`experience...where you`d least expect it!

Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born.
With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical
buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living
proof that the old and the new can live together
harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where
all major companies house their offices. However, the
region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like
the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that
