Neighbourhood: Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

Great for Kids and Adults
Aug 2019 • Family
Not t to be confused with the ship and submarine which are 400-500m away, this indoor museum has loads to entertain both kids (2x under 10) and adults alike. Extra bonus, it was free to us! Only downside is they’re currently renovating so we only saw about half the exhibit, which took us about 45 minutes.

Great Museum At Little Cost
Dec 2015 • Solo
The museum is above average with old barracks, old naval munitions, and stores. The officers/enlisted quarters are of particular interest along with the hospital.

An excellent complement to the National History Museum, and more than just a naval museum.
Oct 2013 • Couples
This museum is more than just a naval museum (although it's very good in that respect); it covers the history of disputes between colonial powers more thoroughly than I've seen this covered anywhere else. It is also very frank about deficiencies in the resources allocated to the Brazilian Navy in the 20th century. Once one has visited this and the National History Museum one should have a clear understanding of how Brazil developed into the country that it is today.

Small but interesting
Sep 2012 • Couples
Small and a bit tired, but this museum nicely complements the National History Museum which is a few blocks away. Some of the explanations are not translated to English so a basic understanding of Portuguese comes in handy.

Brazilian History
Jun 2012
This is a museum not only for those interested in the Brazilian Navy History but also for anyone interested in Brazilian History (of course, from the Navy point of view). Very well organized, this small museum covers the Brazilian Navy role since before its independence until past WW2. Very interesting.

Also its tourist friendly as everything (except for the video/audio parts) has english subtitles.

The best south equator!

If you like naval history, it is something to not skip. Calssic building, well organized and nice displays. Starts with Portuguese heritage, fights against Dutchs and Frenchs, Latin-American struggles and the two World Wars.
