Just like her neighbor (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Antiga Sé), this church might seem a bit simple from the outside (as most churches around downtown Rio) but the inside is definitely impressive considering when it was built and trying to imagine what...More

Located on the flagstone square Praca XV, is one of Rio's finest churches, Igreja da Ordem Tereira de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo. On a brilliantly sunny, hot and humid August afternoon we entered the cool, dark space and after a moment for our...More

This is not a place we would have gone to had we been on our own, but the tour guide suggested it was well worth a visit. How right he was! The main door was locked but access was available through a side door when...More

I saw it from Praça XV, when my private tour guide explained its historical significance. But before taking me there to see its interior, he let me pass under Arco do Teles and walk through the narrow lane called Travessa do Comércio. This experience made...More

The church where several kings were crowned has been beautifully restored. It is the best site around the Praca XV square in Rio which is where the Portuguese kings ruled from.

This is a very nice surprise hidden in the heart of Rio. For many years I have heard about this place, where two Brazilian Emperors were coronate and one Brazilian princess got married, but I never had the opportunity to walk in. Beautiful, lots of...More

Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born.
With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical
buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living
proof that the old and the new can live together
harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where
all major companies house their offices. However, the
region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like
the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that
