We booked a flight by phone a day before and agreed for a meeting in front of our building. The guy came earlier than agreed, and behaved very impolitely. He insisted on geting in our appartement, using our bathrooms, urge us to pay as quick as possible - a price different from the one we aggreed the day before. We therefore decided not to go with him.

Same thing happened to us. Do not use this guide Mauricio. He is scammer and unprofessional. He took us to do hang gliding and we end up doing paragliding. Simply use someone else ...

My wife and I, along with two other couples went to Rio for a few days in December 2011. We had booked hang-gliding for 3 people with Sky Center (Mauricio Monteiro). I urge everyone to NOT book with Mauricio, as he is very unprofessional and tried to scam us. He picked us up at the hotel and told us we had to pay him before we went, so we did. When we got to Sao Conrado, he brought 3 pilots over. Only one of which was willing to take us. The other two disappeared. We later learned that Mauricio had got into an argument with them because he had lowered the price that they would get paid for taking us and kept his commission high. Given that he was short on pilots, Mauricio tried to force us to do paragliding instead. When we told him we did not want to do it anymore, he refused to give us a refund and we had to negotiate to get everything but he kept 10% of the total. Being foreigners in Rio, we had to be careful because he had many friends around and who knows what would have happened. He kept walking away from us and was acting very shady. He kept insisting that we take a walk away from everyone else and was constantly on the phone. I sincerely hope that NO ONE ever uses his service. If we were not in a different country, we would have called the police but we were skeptical as he may be friends with them. Fortunately for us, we met a pilot named Max Turiaco (www.maxflyrio.blogspot.com). We HIGHLY RECOMMEND Max. He is not only a great pilot but also a great person and instructor. He ended up taking all 3 people separately. We ended up spending most of our day, as the weather was cloudy, so we had to wait until there was visibility. Also, we waited for Max as he took one person at a time. I was able to go up with Max and his assistant in their car. When Max took my wife hang-gliding, I came back down the mountain with his assistant in their car. Max also took great video and pictures. When it comes to hang-gliding, having a great pilot makes all the difference. He took his time in the air and his flights were longer than the other pilots. Max also speaks perfect English, Portuguese and Italian. Huge thank to Max for making it a great experience for all of us!

I waited until the next to last day I was in Rio to try to book my hang-gliding excursion and discovered that the wind gods weren't with me. The winds have to be going in the right direction and be the right speed (not too strong nor weak). So I could not go that day and the next day (my last in Rio) was no better. Hang gliding was the one thing I really wanted to do in Rio and I missed out. If I had called ahead and given the various hang-gliding companies my travel dates and contact info, they could have called me on one of my first few days in Rio if the winds had been good for a flight & if they had an opening. At age 66, maybe it was a good thing that I didn't get to do this, but it was probably the last time I will visit Brazil, so I was disappointed. I can try hang gliding at home some time, but it would have been a special treat to do it in RIo.
