When stopping to try the rail trail for the 1st time, I visited the Shot Tower which I had seen years ago and knew a lot about its history related to historic local lead mining. It is well-signed, easy to get to, and interesting. Doesn't take long to see. They have maintained it well. You can take stairs down if... More

The tower was closed when we stopped to see it. Fortunately, my husband and I have been here before. It is worth the visit, to hear the history. It is a must for children.

I visited the Shot Tower many years ago as a young teen because my great-great grandfather was to have made shot here during the Civil War and my great aunts made this a must see destination. It was open all the time then and I remember how fascinating it was to have them describe how they actually made bullets. I... More

The tour guide was very informative. I was truly amazed at the way ammunition was made. It also makes you admire the stamina of those who worked there. There are lots of steep steps to climb inside, but there are interesting objects in the 'lobby' for those who cannot climb. Picnic area and beautiful scenery

Stopped by here after driving by numerous times on I-77. Excellent stop. The shot tower is more than 200 years old! It would be impressive to build today but it was done by hand with what we would consider rudimentary tools. Quite a feat. Tod hand dig a hole straight enough to drop shot...then to hand dig a tunnel that... More

The shot tower itself is only open for tours on Friday/Saturday/Sunday, but on weekdays you can hike or bike on the shaded trail along the water. Car parking pass costed $4 on weekday.

Nice little park off I-77. They made bullets and buckshot here. Walk to the top . Info available. Overlooking The New River and the New River Trail runs by here. Worth the stop for us.

My husband had always wanted to stop at this historic site, so during a sight-seeing adventure to Virginia, we made it a point to stop. All of us, my husband, children and I were extremely happy we stopped here. Construction of the shot tower started right after the Revolutionary War and was completed in 1807. It's amazing how the tower... More

This is an interesting place to visit. I love the history and the beautiful views from the top of the tower. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. There are also trails you can walk if you want to get in touch with nature. It's really nice if you're passing through or for a day trip.
