I am one of the fortunate ones in that I live reasonably close to River Farm and can & have visited frequently over the past 10 years. I can directly relate to my title "Beauty in the Fall, Spring, Summer and Winter." My last visit was on November 17th, 2016 and it was breathtaking with the transition from Fall to... More

One of George Washington's five farms, it was originally his brother Laurence's. The house itself is available for parties (large tented area) outside or in. View of the Potomac is lovely and the grounds reflect native species but not so manicured as to be fussy.

I discovered River Farm, home of the American Horticultural Society, when I visited it as a possible wedding venue for my daughter. A short drive along the Potomac River on the GW Parkway (minutes out of Old Town Alexandria), you enter through a low fence onto beautiful grounds (planted yet very natural-looking), lovely flowers and trees, overlooking the river. Walk... More

No crowds, few people, colonial architecture, quick strolls thru botanical grounds, nice little children's garden, a little exposed to sun on those hot and humid days. Not heavy on historical info, but a nice quick stop on the banks of the Potomac enroute to Mt Vernon, though if your are on bikes it's on the opposite side of the Parkway... More

Happy you enjoyed your visit here! A nice tie-in with Mount Vernon, since George Washington once owned River Farm (one of his five local farms). The foundations of our Estate House are colonial era, but the buildings you see are from the early 20th century. Come back again in the fall for wonderful color, and bring a picnic! More

River Farm is a lovely place to visit. Their outdoor gardens are absolutely lovely. I recommend taking a picnic with you as there are not any eateries there. Only downside is that they have limited hours so check the website before you visit.

We're delighted that you enjoyed your visit here! And we agree -- River Farm is an ideal place for a picnic. We do rent out River Farm to private parties (and there are many summer weddings), so we're open to the public on Saturdays 9-1 from April through September. We're open year-round (except holidays) Monday through Friday from 9 to... More

The historical setting and setting for weddings are mentioned by several reviewers. We recently visited with our daughter and young grandchildren and were impressed by the beauty and charm of this peaceful oasis. The garden is small but exquisite, and there are lots of beautiful walkways, shady trees, and park benches that entice lingering. The garden has shaded picnic tables... More

We came here today for the annual garden and flower show sponsored by River Farm's owner, the American Horticulture Society. The mansion has a very pleasant exterior and some very attractive rooms that are well appointed with period furniture and objects of art. The home is good sized but it is not a mansion. The home is situated on 25... More

So glad that you enjoyed our annual Spring Garden Market! Thanks for writing to let others know about it. We always have an unusual mix of plant and garden decor vendors. They raptors and alpacas usually attend and are favorites with both kids and adults. In 2017 the Spring Garden Market will be on Friday and Saturday, April 21 -22. More

I had a picture in my mind of colonial era agriculture, gardens, etc. I shouldn't have. Our visit was a bit early in the year to take advantage of some of the strengths this place must have. A large meadow made for wildflower blooms wasn't near bloom. The small garden area was getting its annuals planted during our visit. But... More

Thank you for visiting, and writing about your time here! We are fortunate indeed in our riverside setting. You are correct, we are not a colonial era garden like Mount Vernon, but as you saw, a modern garden with a variety of features including our acclaimed 4-acre Meadow. The Ballroom is the largest room in our Estate House and it... More

River Farm is a rarity - property owned by George Washington and now open to the public during business hours.
