The Apothecary served local customers, including the Washingtons and Robert E. Lee, between 1792 and 1933. The shop was transformed into a museum shortly after its closing and visitors can still view the original ingredients, products, and documents left behind by this 141-year-old family business.

We came here mid-day on a Saturday. We were part of a 6 person group. The tour was terrific (and cheap!). I would highly recommend it, although it's not for toddlers or babies as it transverses several floors.

A wonderful little museum that is perfectly preserved. A fascinating place made that much more interesting by the knowledgeable and friendly tour guides who take you through the spaces. It's a short excursion but well worth it. The upstairs space takes you to another time and world.

This Apothecary takes you back in time to where Martha Washington ordered her drugs and items for what ailed her! Amazing history of this building and the business. Very interesting short tour at a very good price!

there is plenty for both a layman / tourist AND a modern-day pharmacist to learn about the history of medicines in this amazingly well preserved shop that had a long history serving Old Town Alexandrians, including many prominent clients whose names appear in history books

The Apothecary is a step back in time. It dates back to the mid 1700's with Martha Washington and the items from 1900's are still there from when the store closed. Good tour for history buffs. Need to be able to climb stairs to get to the really good stuff

The authentic apothecary has all the original bottles, potions and instruments sold in the 1800's when it was closed. A dentist guided us through the museum discussing the old remedies and medicines used compared to what is done today. The second floor shows the manufacturing area with its storage of everything that was sold. It is a very unusual museum.

The staff is simply amazing - so friendly and so knowledgeable about the artifacts. The museum itself used to be an actual working apothecary for over 100 years till the owners went bankrupt in 1922 - but the coolest thing is - the next year the place was converted into a museum - and all the jars with their original... We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this museum. The guide was quite informative and answered plenty of our son's questions while everyone was just staring in amazement at this place. The room with all of the ingredients is definitely the jaw dropping part of the tour, which is reasonably priced as well. Visit it, you won't be disappointed.

Along with our very enthusiastic docent, we enjoyed the tour through the Apothecary Museum. So much history to absorb in wonderful Old Town Alexandria. Just off King Street, it's well worth stopping in. It's very well preserved and a wonderful experience. Don't miss it.

The Apothecary Museum is amazing! It has almost been a week and I am STILL talking about it to everyone I see. The whole experience is amazing. I did multiple museum tours while I was in town but this was one of my favorite. The fact that the majority of the Apothecary is untouched and left as it was when... More
