Neat old mine on a great road in the desert. Don't let the posters who say you need 4X4 scare you off. You don't need 4x4. I've done this road numerous times in a 2WD vehicle.

We were on a cross country jeep tour with Far Flung which took us down Glenn Springs Road, then followed River Road to Castelon. It absolutely required a high clearance 4X4 to get all the way through River Road. Lots of arroyos, and washouts from...More

You probably know you have to have 4-wheel drive or high clearance vehicle but this piece of history is well worth the drive. This is my happy place and always will be! BBNP is awesome and has something for everyone!

Typical abandoned mine, interesting to stop by if you are driving this route but would not make a special trip to see it

After starting at Solis camp we traveled west toward Mariscal summit. View from the top and many spots on the way down to the mine were spectacular. Once at the mine you descend a mile past an old tower and then the old cinnabar brick...More

First of all, the Mariscal Mine is more than 100 miles from Alpine, in the Southeast corner of the Big Bend National Park. Access is by the River Road just out of Boquillas. The road is mostly a wide gravel road with a few narrow...More

From Panther Junction in Big Bend NP, this is approx. 2 HOURs driving to the Mariscal Mine. From the paved 2 lane hwy, turn down River Road, which is a PRIMITIVE one lane path that demands a high clearance vehicle with tires that can withstand...More

There are several buildings still standing that were part of the mine complex. A quarter mile walk is required to get from a parking area to the mine buildings, but it is worth the walk if you are able.

Mariscal Mine was the mid-way point from the Santa Elena and our campsite (Solis 1). Our kids were into minecraft, so this place was on their bucket list. The kids were disappointed when they saw the barricades at the mine entrance. Since the mine was...More

Not sure why this shows a location in Alpine. Other reviewers have gone into depth on the history, which it is worth your time to read so you understand what you're looking at. DON'T TOUCH the bricks or tailings -- particularly if you have kids,...More
