Wow!! Impressive display of the history of Altoona railroad builders, their lives, families, and the story behind the steam engine. I grew up in Beaver Falls PA and had no clue that Altoona had all that railroad history. 2 movies, exhibits, and many buildings that house old railway cars to see plus the museum. Allow 2-3 hours.

We purchased the combo ticket which also admitted us to Horseshoe Curve. They offer discounted tickets too. The museum is open until 5 pm. Railroad and history buffs will enjoy the exhibits that tell the story of Altoona and the railroad industry. The museum includes a roundhouse and railroad cars. Allow 1-2 hours to watch the two videos and wander... More

I visited the site with my uncle, a former PRR employee, and found it to bring back memories of my own childhood. My Dad's family were all involved in the PRR in various capacities from foremen welders to quality control. I was a wonderful experience, especially seeing relatives names on the memorial boards and the history of railroading. I must... More

While this museum does not boast the collections found at larger state railroad museums, I don't recall a finer experience dealing with railroad life, the science and technology developed to set railroad standards, and the influence of an industry on a locality. There are lots of artifacts, excellent films, and interactive media that both adults and children will enjoy. The... More

I would say overall that the museum has some very good displays and exhibits on trains, the life of a railroader, and, in particular, what trains meant to the city of Altoona. However, other than the model railroad, which was fun to look at, there wasn't a lot to keep the attention of our three children (ages 3, 5 &... More

I got to see Pennsylvania rolling stock in person for the first time. Nice displays in the museum. I bought a shirt and a hat in the gift shop. I did not have time to go over the walkway over the active tracks.
