About
This former red-light area is now one of Kuala Lumpur’s top culinary destinations. The sidewalks are lined with seafood eateries, hawker stalls, and coffee shops serving some of Malaysia’s best hawker fare. You’ll find delicious street food like satay, BBQ chicken wings, stir-fried noodles, and also desserts. Wash it all down with some ice-cold beer or the locals’ favorite: sugarcane juice. This buzzing street draws budget travelers for its affordable prices and shutterbugs for its nostalgic vibes. Join a food tour of Kuala Lumpur, which will bring you to all the best food spots in Jalan Alor and the city. – Tripadvisor

- Marcus VentlingerSweden203 contributionsTip: Try something from everyone instead of everything from one. A must visit.Fantastic environment for the street food lover. You can walk up and down the street several times. Recommends going and buying a few picks from different stalls of things that look tempting, instead of eating your fill in one place. If you choose to sit down, it is recommended to just take something, then move on and try the next one. The juices, dumplings, curled potato and much more are fantastic. For those who want to continue to the pub/bar, then the entire main street by the market is full of this. Likewise, massages and spas are available in abundance around. Don't recommend: Boleh seafood pot - quite disgruntled staff, run out of things, have to wait extra long for some things. I saw online reviews that the boss is honest, so we decided to give it a try. When we wanted to choose Mao Shan King, the boss said that there was no stock. He also patiently explained to us that it is Mao Shan King in April. The flowering period is in peak season in June/July. They don’t just pretend to be tourists and sell other varieties of durian to us as Mao Shan Huang!Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 April 2024

First, I found the area to be fascinating, so many food stalls and restaurants. It was hard to find a place but randomly I sat at a place called Restoran Sai Woo and ordered the Fried Yam Basket and loved it! The flavor was amazing, great vibes, people watching, etc... I highly recommend coming to Jalan Alor to sample food and experience this area while in Kuala Lumpur.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 June 2024

The dinner we had at Ming Kee restaurant was excellent, e.g. BBQ chicken wings, Hokkien fried noodle, salty fish bean sprouts,... etc. I would definitely go back to this restaurant again.
However, a disappointing durian experience at Jalan Alor durian vendor. We asked for a Musang King durian and asked if it was "guaranteed" (i.e. a higher price per kg) to be creamy, sweet and ripe. They said they would. We are not experts in durian, but definitely can tell a ripe one from a not ripe one. We were half way through hoping the rest would be better but we noticed it was all the same. We explained what we noticed to the vendor and the vendor brought us another piece of durian in a Saran wrapped package for exchange. We declined for the exchange; because we did not know what type/grade of durian it was in the package. The durian vendor gave us a discount of MYR $37 from the total MYR $287 and insisted us to pay MYR $250. See the vendor in the photo. We will never visit this durian vendor again.
I would give 5 to Ming Kee restaurant and 1 to the durian vendor. Therefore, my overall experience at Jalan Alor was 4.

We visited here for dinner with the family on a rainy mid week night as it was listed as a “must visit” stop in KL. I was hoping to see more street food stalls but was met with mostly open air restaurants, which could have been due to the rain. The stalls that were there all sold the same items, so not a lot of variety.
The restaurant staff were really pushy and the food was no different to any other restaurants in the area (all either seafood or Thai). I would suggest sticking to other, quieter back streets for a more enjoyable and cheaper meal.
If you like people watching and a busy atmosphere and don’t mind the hassling, then head here for a meal. Otherwise, skip the tourist prices and head to a quieter restaurant around the corner.

Jalan Alor is the place to go if you’re craving street food! This street is filled with vibrant food stalls offering everything from grilled meats to fresh seafood. The energy here is contagious, with people chatting, eating and enjoying the lively atmosphere. Every dish I tried was packed with flavour, and it was fun to explore all the different options.

The food here is quite diverse, the restaurant staff invite guests quite enthusiastically.
But the food here is extremely expensive (I bought 5 grilled skewers for RM 44 and a smoothie for RM 10) but they taste extremely bad while this is just a food street. Meanwhile, I went to eat at the Food Court at Suria KLCC Mall and the price was much cheaper and more delicious (A bowl of noodles was only RM 13 and a glass of milk tea was only RM 8.9). Besides, this street is too crowded, the hygiene on this street is quite bad, they are quite dirty and and can be affected by the weather (very inconvenient if it rains). If you stay at Suria KLCC, it will be very clean, there will be regular cleaning staff and you can watch the Petronas tower or the colorful water music at the lake.
Therefore, I recommend going to Food Court in Mall instead of Jalan Alor Food Street

Must see experience in Bukit Bintang area. Atmosphere at night especially after 8-9pm is crowded and busy. Lots of tourists and few locals, and yes expensive for Malaysia but for convenience and access it is awesome at least once if in area.
For durian lovers have a number of stalls, and for convenience and high exchange rate it is very good. If you can get to SS2 or other suburban durian markets this will be cheaper but for holiday access and if not on a tight budget, go for it!

Amazing experience of foods and atmosphere all reasonably priced. Great service and when the heavens opened I have never seen so many people move so quickly to put the covers up. That in itself was an expensive. Highly recommend everyone that comes to KL to experience the food market.

Simply just toooo much choice.
Main meals, snacks, deserts, fruits the list just goes on.
We started with a few snacks - recommend Wagu beef skewers to start. Lovely and light
Headed over to a restaurant serving local malay cuisine - the best
finished off with cups of cut fruit, ice cream and mini cakes.
Only to repeat our trip a few times during our stay trying different foods.

We visited the food market twice, and ate amazing food for £50 for four adults...for everything...drinks, food, the lot. You have to be careful as fish on a stall that has been there all day you just wouldn't touch, but we had japanese one night and chicken fish and stingray another. A must visit.

It felt like I was at a festival food stall and the atmosphere was really fun.
It might be best to go in the evening when it has cooled down a bit.
Many of the shops were open until late at night and the prices were reasonable, which made for a fun atmosphere.

Great street market. Many food options to try - stick with the ones that are busy and have lots of locals at them! Food was delicious and fresh. Vendors very accommodating and all spoke English to some degree. Yes, it's a tourist spot for sure, but it also has great atmosphere and food. Prices are reasonable - not "bargain basement" but still very reasonable. Order the small size of everything so you can try more things. We went back more than once.
Oddly, cars are still permitted on the street, so watch your back. They tend to move slowly but they will surprise you as they emerge from the crowd. It should be a pedestrian street only during the night market.

What would be the best thing or place to eat here if I have a very severe nut allergy?
Written 18 July 2019
Best to stick to seafood. You can also ask at restaurants and emphasise your allergy. Stay away from satay especially the sauce which is peanut based. Sometimes the meat marinade could also be contaminated with peanut.

I would suggest to take the monorail at Imbi, the traffic is hectic that time of night and a 5 minute trip can take up to 40 min. Taxi's would take a long time.

Do they have vegetarian restaurants there?
Written 20 June 2018
Jalan Alor is a street full of little restaurants with wide variety of food selection. I am pretty sure you get a vegetarian dish somewhere. But I don't think there is one particular restaurant that is 100% vegetarian. Hope you enjoy your stay there. Good luck!

Tactically it is available 24/7 from breakfast till supper. But usually the crowd will be concentrate during evening to late night and that is also the most food choice available.
