Beautiful shrine

Japan have Shinto shrines & temples everywhere but they are some more attractive than others but all to be seen.

Old Historical place... take your time for temple and gardens or the early morning ceremony - wonderful. This place shows Buddhism and traditions and myths

It was dark tunnel inside of tunnel. We had to walk without any lights!!! It's called hell to heaven as at the last, you will see lights! So scared and fun!!! 善光寺の中には暗闇の中、壁をつたって歩いて行くトンネルがあり、何メートルかは謎ですが怖くてミステリアスで楽しかったです。これは地獄から抜け出す為の道と言われているそうで最後は光が見えて安心しました!

Travel from Karuizawa to Nagano by Shinkansen using JR east pass (Nagano, Niigitta)! So excited to travel to Nagano as we will collect stamps for Seven Deities of Good Fortune, stayed in temple lodging & attend next day temple morning service about 6am in Zenko-ji temple with all the monks. We get the paper for stamps of Seven Deities of... More

Zenko-ji has a row of dozens of little shops leading up to it, which feature tons of omiyage as well as sweets and our favorite snack, the oyaki. Oyaki is a vegetarian snack made with some sort of rice-potato-meal/flour and stuffed with whatever filling you like. We particularly enjoyed the apple, mushroom, and mixed greens, but all of them were... More

We came here on the local bus from Nagano station. It is not very far from here but uphill and time was tight. Walked back in to town which is a pleasant stroll. It is a nice temple with pretty gardens and worth a visit. We saw a photo of it illuminated in red at night, so went back again... More

I visited this temple with friends (Caucasian and Japanese) and it was both a fun and spiritually rewarding process. Many temples I feel as though I am being disrespectful by participating in the spiritual activities but this felt very open and accommodating to foreigners. The markets and area is also quite nicely laid out.

The morning service was fantastic! We stayed at the Metropolitan which was a 30 minute walk south of temple. Since we didn't want to walk that far in the pouring rain, we had our hotel reserve a taxi ready for us at 5:50. This proved to be more than enough time to make the 6:23 ceremony and we could have... Nagano isn't to crowded with tourists, so here you get a big beautiful temple and some room to meditate.

Love how the place is being preserved maintained. Quiet and peaceful visit. Listen to the bell as the sound encompassed the whole compound. Get some fun in omikuji or get some souvenirs related. The compound has beautiful cherry blossoms as well.
