The "other" moss garden in Kyoto. The most famous one is Koke-dera but to gain access there is pricey and visitors are required to apply weeks in advance, attend a lecture and trace sutras, and pay quite a bit to gain access. Sure, it keeps...More

It's a small garden, you see all of it once entered. What makes it unique is the moss. We were here during autumn foliage and saw no leaves on the ground surprisingly. Very well kept garden, manicured moss lawn. Sun rays on the moss through...More

So calm and peaceful, the leaves during the fall season are spectacular! The entrance fee is 300 yen but it was so worth it just for the landscaping. There are a few tourists but it wasn't packed like the bamboo Grove or other parts of...More

This temple is at the end of bamboo path so it quite long way to go but absolutely worth visiting as on the way to the temple you can find nice surroundings, shops, restaurants and passage. Not so many people know this place so not...More

The yard of the temple is covered with many moss. It’s very cute! If you like moss, I recommend this temple. Additionally, you can listen beautiful sounds made by Suikinkutsu.

Gio-ji is not big, not easy to find, and can be seen in a short time. On the other hand it means that there aren't many others there, and you can take your time enjoying the moss garden and tiny building. The emerald green moss...More

We were dealing with massive crowds both international tourists and local tourists with Golden Week during our visit in Arashiyama, it was to the point where you couldn't move in the bamboo park without bumping to anyway so to veer off and discover this gem...More

This temple is a bit out of the way, requiring a 20+ minute walk from Tenryu-ji Temple. Yes, it is quiet and untouristed. It is also hard to find as no signs show the way. We used Google Maps and was routed to the back...More

Gio-ji temple is an off the beaten path kind of place that most of the busy tourists crowds will overlook. It is accessible by foot after only a 20 minute walk from Saga Arashiyama station, though it took us a little while longer to find...More

Gio-ji is a small temple in a small property, but the moss garden is truly remarkable. Every shade of green seems to be represented, and the moss undulates and mounds beneath the canopy of trees, flowing around their trunks like a still stream. It's a...More

Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best
eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved

Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea
houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the
riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature
lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The
area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and

You don't need to book tickets in advance to come here, you just show up and pay in person at the entrance gate.
